Position Overview

The Senior Payroll Officer plays a key role in ensuring the accurate and timely delivery of payroll services across AEC. This position is responsible for end-to-end payroll processing for both project-based and corporate employees, including the application of complex industrial instruments, compliance with relevant legislation, and coordination of payroll reporting and reconciliations.

Reporting to the People and Culture Manager, this role works closely with the wider People & Culture team, the Finance team, and project teams, ensuring payroll accuracy, system integrity, and adherence to company policies. This role also contributes to process improvement initiatives, training support, and system optimisation to enhance efficiency across AEC's payroll operations.

Key Responsibilities


• Manage end-to-end weekly, fortnightly and monthly payroll in line with AEC policies, Awards and Contracts.


• Accurately process payments, deductions and entitlements including allowances, overtime, leave, TOIL, site allowances, LAHA and superannuation.


• Reconcile timesheets, adjustments and back pay, and maintain employee records in HRIS and payroll systems.


• Ensure compliance with Fair Work, taxation and superannuation requirements, including PAYG and STP lodgments.


• Prepare payroll reports, cost allocations and audit schedules, and support month- and year-end reconciliations and ATO reporting.


• Work closely with Finance to align payroll journals with project cost reporting and provide data insights for management.


• Maintain and optimise payroll and HRIS systems such as Employment Hero, Xero and MYOB Advanced.


• Support automation, process documentation and continuous improvement initiatives.


• Provide timely payroll advice and champion payroll awareness across the business through coaching and collaboration.


• Maintain a high level of professionalism including operating with integrity and confidentiality of sensitive information.

Skills & Experience


• Minimum 5+ years' experience in end-to-end payroll processing, preferably within construction, energy, or engineering sectors.


• Strong understanding of relevant Awards, EBAs, and industrial instruments (e.g., Building & Construction General On-site Award).


• Proficient in Employment Hero, MYOB Advanced, Xero, or similar payroll systems, with strong Excel skills.


• Comprehensive understanding of the Fair Work Act, NES, superannuation, taxation, and payroll compliance requirements.


• Demonstrated experience managing complex payrolls with varying rosters, allowances, and site conditions.


• Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills.


• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.


• High level of professionalism, discretion, and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
