About the opportunity

AUSTRAC is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join the Collaborative Analytics and Data Partnerships team where our vision is to strengthen data leveraging and data discovery through strategic data partnerships and co-development of solutions. You'll play a crucial role in supporting the growth and expansion for data partnerships within Fintel Alliance and beyond with other agencies. The Fintel Alliance is AUSTRAC's public private partnership, consisting of over 30 partners made up of government and private industry organisations.

You will work closely with partner analytics teams and internal operational analytics to deliver collaborative data products, insights, capabilities, and analytics. In this role, you'll use best-practice data science methodologies to solve challenging business problems and ensure data is translated into meaningful and actionable insights.

This role offer a unique opportunity to help shape major enterprise shifts and drive AUSTRAC's data-driven culture across AUSTRAC.

What are we looking for (Selection Criteria)

  • Tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent experience in a relevant field such as Analytics, data science or statistics.
  • Graduate qualification and/or equivalent experience in a relevant field or equivalent industry experience.
  • Demonstrated Programming skills in Python, R, Matlab, Java, Scala or Julia (PySpark desirable) and ability to demonstrated experience with end-user dashboards and solutions (Power BI desirable).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working within legislative, regulatory and compliance frameworks.
  • Familiarity with DevOps and MLOps practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and guide AUSTRAC colleagues.

Key duties

  • Generate insights and plans that address business problems, and a deep understanding of modernised collaboration systems.
  • Lead the development of strategic data partnerships, including contributing to future state design needs of data exchange environments and a design model to meet business partner needs.
  • Lead the design and implementation of data and BI engineering solutions. Ensure solutions are compliant, secure and manage data access and permissions in line with privacy and partnership obligations.
  • Oversee the collection and cleansing of data from relevant partners.
  • Oversee the development of self-service visualization tools.

  • Must be an Australian citizen at the time you apply.
  • Will need to undertake AUSTRAC's pre-engagement checks.
  • Will need to obtain and maintain an ongoing Negative Vetting Level 1 Security Clearance.
