Role purpose

The key purpose of the Data Engineer role is to shape the organisation's data infrastructure. This includes developing complex data pipelines for large-scale data ingestion, transformation, and storage. The Data Engineer enhances workflows to ensure optimal performance, scalability, and reliability, maintaining robust and efficient data systems. Responsibilities also encompass implementing advanced data models, managing data lakes, warehouses, and other storage solutions. Additionally, the Data Engineer integrates structured and unstructured data into centralised repositories and establishes best practices for data quality monitoring, validation, and governance. This role supports data-driven decision-making and aligns with the organisation's strategic objectives.

Key Accountabilities

Data Engineering

  • Architect and develop sophisticated ETL/ELT pipelines for large-scale data ingestion, transformation, and storage.
  • Optimise workflows for high performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Implementation of advanced data models and architectures.
  • Manage and maintain data lakes, warehouses, and other storage solutions.
  • Ensure integration of structured and unstructured data into centralised repositories.
  • Establish and enforce best practices for data quality monitoring, validation, and governance.
  • Design and implement secure data handling protocols aligned with regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with analysts, scientists, architects, and business stakeholders to identify and deliver data solutions that meet strategic objectives.

Experience & Capabilities

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE (what you have done)

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in data engineering, with a experience in building and managing complex data pipelines.
  • Proficient in programming in Python, Spark, SQL and NoSQL.
  • Experience using AWS or Azure.

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE (what you need to know)

  • Knowledge of data modelling and star schema methodology.
  • Proficiency in data engineering programming languages such as Python.
  • Knowledge of database technologies (e.g. PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Snowflake) and big data tools (e.g. Spark, Hadoop).
  • Understanding of cloud platforms (e.g. AWS, GCP, Azure) and their data services.
  • Familiarity with containerisation technologies and orchestration tools (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes).

CAPABILITIES (what you can do)

  • Develop large-scale data pipelines to process and integrate complex datasets efficiently.
  • Work with live streaming data.
  • Work with JSON and Parquet data formats.
  • Build API based solutions.
