About the roleIn this role, you'll provide expert advice on built heritage referrals from internal and external stakeholders, and strengthen the City's relationship with State government partners. You'll also lead the implementation of heritage studies and offer sound advice and leadership to Council on all matters relating to heritage and conservation.

Work type: Permanent, part-time position. 3 days a week.

Classification: Band 7, $106,158 pa plus super pro rata.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Deliver timely, high-quality responses to internal and external stakeholders, ensuring built heritage needs and standards are met.
  • Interpret and advise on legislative, regulatory, and policy requirements to guide referrals, overlays, and Council reports.
  • Analyse proposals and offer technical heritage input into assessments and key City projects.
  • Prepare heritage assessments and oversee external heritage consultants where required.
  • Support the Coordinator Built Heritage in delivering the City's Heritage Strategy and developing policies and plans that protect and celebrate Geelong's heritage assets.
  • Work with internal teams, consultants, community groups, and government agencies to achieve best-practice heritage outcomes.
  • Provide trusted, specialist advice on heritage buildings and places to leaders and stakeholders across Council.
  • Work with the Coordinator to implement the Built Heritage Unit's annual plans and strategic goals in line with corporate priorities.
  • Track progress and report on outcomes to ensure projects, referrals, and strategies are delivered on time, on budget, and to the highest standards.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have a tertiary qualification in heritage, collection management, architecture, planning or related field and significant professional experience in heritage or collection management in a comparable organisation.

Essential Experience:

  • Proven experience preparing heritage and built form policies, studies, conservation management plans, statements of significance, and referral advice.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver built heritage strategies, policies, or projects on time and to a high standard.
  • Skilled at managing multiple tasks and competing priorities while maintaining quality outcomes.
  • Strong ability to resolve issues, build partnerships, and foster cooperation across diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience contributing to a positive, inclusive, and multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Proven ability to work with community groups, government agencies, and other stakeholders to achieve heritage outcomes aligned with Council objectives and policies.

Preferred candidates will be required to undergo a National Police Check as part of the recruitment process (funded by the City).
