The Enteric Virus Team at MCRI is seeking a passionate, detail-oriented professional to join our Enteric Diseases research group within the Infection, Immunity and Global Health Theme.
The Opportunity
As a Research Assistant, you will be the backbone of our laboratory operations—coordinating the receipt, storage, and in-depth analysis of clinical samples. Using advanced techniques such as ELISA, RT-PCR, qPCR, and sequencing, you will ensure the highest quality standards are met, maintaining data integrity and supporting impactful research outcomes.
About Your New Team
At the forefront of understanding gastrointestinal infections, our Enteric Diseases Group specialises in studying rotavirus—the leading cause of severe diarrhea in children worldwide. As the Coordinating Centre for the Australian Rotavirus Surveillance Network, we analyze stool samples nationwide to track rotavirus genotype patterns and evaluate the effectiveness of the national vaccination program. Our group also proudly houses the WHO Collaborating Centre for Child Health and the WHO Rotavirus Regional Reference Laboratory, supporting vital regional efforts in rotavirus detection and capacity building.
You'll be joining a team driving breakthrough vaccine research, including the development of the RV3-BB rotavirus vaccine, and supporting clinical trials and commercial vaccine partners.
Your Responsibilities Include
- Coordinate the receipt, storage, and processing of stool samples through the Australian Rotavirus Surveillance Network
- Perform detailed analyses using ELISA and molecular techniques including RT-PCR and qPCR
- Accurately enter and manage data within REDCap databases
- Adhere strictly to laboratory protocols and quality control measures to ensure sample and data in
What We Need From You
- Degree/Honours/Masters qualification in Science or related discipline
- Proficient in manual and automated RNA/DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, interpretation of genomic data generated by Sanger sequencing
- Proven experience in ELISA assays (including diagnostic antigen detection and serum IgA), Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) library preparation, and digital data management using REDCap databases and LabArchives, with a strong commitment to laboratory protocols and quality control standards is highly regarded
- Exceptional time management, organisational and analytical problem-solving skills along with the ability to communicate effectively with different stakeholders
