About Warraber Island and The Warraber Campus
Warraber Island, also known as Sue Island, is nestled in the heart of the Vigilant Channel, surrounded by warm, crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral reefs. Rich in traditional foods, the island is home to an abundance of wongai, coconuts, and other native resources. The waters teem with fish, turtles, and dugong, creating a thriving ecosystem. The island's people are part of the Kulkalaig group from the Central Islands of the Torres Strait, with the Nagilgal and Waraberalgal clans holding deep cultural ties to the land. Life on Warraber Island remains steeped in tradition, where hunting, dancing, and thayilai (feasts) play essential roles in daily life, keeping the heritage alive for generations.
The Warraber Campus, established in 1985 and integrated into Tagai State College in 2007, serves as a vital educational hub for the community. Part of a network of 16 primary campuses across the Torres Strait, it provides education to students from Kindergarten to Year 6, with a unique focus on supporting students for whom English is an additional language. The school is part of a broader educational framework that includes both primary and secondary campuses, with strong ties to the FNQTAFE campus on Thursday Island. Tagai State College plays a crucial role in maintaining educational standards and fostering opportunities for students across the Torres Strait's vast 48,000-square-kilometre region.
