St. Michael's College are currently seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to join our team as a full-time Grounds and Maintenance Officer. This is a vital role in our College, ensuring our campus remains a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for our community, students and staff. This positon will commence immediately.
As the Grounds and Maintenance Officer, you will be essential to our school's daily operations. You will work closely with the Principal to ensure our campus is well-maintained and provides a high-quality environment for our pupils and staff. You will be responsible directly to the Director of Finance, Director of Early Learning, or their nominated delegate for daily maintenance issues.
Your main role will involve performing a variety of routine grounds and facilities tasks to keep the school running smoothly. While you'll have the independence to manage your day-to-day duties, please note that although this position doesn't require you to perform specialist work that would typically be done by a qualified tradesperson; the Grounds and Maintenance Officer position requires physical duties including but not limited to - walking, standing for long periods, kneeling, crouching, lifting, digging, raking, sweeping.
Grounds and Maintenance Officer
REPORTS TO: Principal
RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Finance/Director of Early Learning or their delegate
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Working with Children Check, CurrentDriver's License.
Experience
- Experience in a similar role in a School or other environment.
- Knowledge and experience in WHS practices and procedures.
- Comprehensive experience with power and garden tools.
Purpose
- To ensure that the College's grounds, buildings, plant and equipment (school, ELC and OSHC) are well maintained, well presented, physically secure, compliant with all appropriate regulations and provide a safe environment for the College community.
General Expectations
- Act as a productive member of the St. Michael's College team, developing and supporting the College values, philosophy and ethos.
- Serve as good ambassadors of St. Michael's College. This includes conducting oneself in accordance with the professional standards of the College, including being well-groomed and wearing appropriate attire.
- Perform your duties to the best of your ability and be accountable for your performance.
- Attend meetings and nominated College committees.
- Complete other duties that are directed as needs change or grow, if the duties are consistent with the purpose of this position and any relevant legal and/or industrial obligations.

Cleaning
- Tidying and maintaining outdoor grounds, paths and public areas.
- Using a leaf blower to clear paths of fallen leaves, as well as the use of high-pressure equipment to clean concrete paths and other external surfaces.
Operation of Machinery
- Operation of machinery including a tractor-mounted fertiliser spreader, hand-held aerator, tractor-mounted aerator, trailer-mounted boom and hand-wand spray equipment, knapsack sprayer, tractor-mounted forklift, backhoe, slasher, hedge trimmer, brush cutter and chainsaw.
Maintenance
- Mowing, slashing, spraying of herbicides, irrigation, line marking and using a whipper-snipper. These activities will be completed with the aid of either a push mower, ride-on mower or tractor with power take off (PTO) equipment.
- Operation and maintenance of irrigation systems.
Cutting down trees, applying mulch or fertiliser to gardens, planting trees and landscaping the grounds.
Regular raking, sweeping and shovelling of playground areas as well as replacement of impact material and transportation of structural materials such as hardwood sleepers.
Ongoing visual inspection of playground areas for hazards and development of new playground areas.
Completion of a variety of minor maintenance tasks that have been requested by other staff members, either verbally or in the form of a written request. Tasks may involve changing light bulbs, testing and tagging, fixing window latches, wall mounting pictures, unblocking toilets, cleaning gutters/silt traps/drains etc.
Completion of major projects such as painting classrooms or making structural modifications to handrails etc.
Miscellaneous tasks
- Emptying and cleaning rubbish bins and cleaning toilets/classrooms during the day following incidents involving spillages, vomit, faeces etc. Assisting with relocating animals.
- Assisting with traffic control etc.
- Assistance with St. Michael's events: including St. Michael's College Fair, Medieval Tournament, Celebration and Presentation events, Musical, Speldour, Athletics, Cross Country etc.
- Moving furniture/heavy items/deliveries around the campus (school/ELC)
- Assisting other employees in assembling new furniture or moving furniture and classroom supplies to different locations within the school. This may also involve marking and recording of equipment for auditing, security and purchasing requirements.
- Chair set up for assemblies/events etc, including lifting, carrying and set up of individual chairs or stacks/rows of chairs.
- Assistance with camps/excursions/incursions/events, involving accessing equipment required for camps/excursions/incursions/events and transport to and from appropriate locations and set up/take down of equipment at the venue.
Daily Operations
Assisting with daily opening of the Early Learning Centre, OSHC and St. Michael's College.
