Position Summary

Tangentyere Council Aboriginal Corporation (TCAC) is a community controlled Public Benevolent Institution delivering human services and social enterprise activities for the benefit of Aboriginal people from the Alice Springs Town Camps, urban Alice Springs, and Central Australia.

Tangentyere Council deliver a range of Youth, Family & Community Safety (YFCS) services across Town Camps and Alice Springs, supporting children, young people, families, and communities through the delivery of daytime and after-hours services focused on recreation, diversion, out-of-home care, community safety and family support programs.

Tangentyere Family Support Service delivers early intervention, and prevention supports for Aboriginal families in Alice Springs, focusing on the wellbeing and best interests of children aged 0–18. The program offers culturally safe, trauma-informed case management tailored to each family's unique circumstances.

Using a goal-oriented, family-focused approach, the service supports families to create safe and nurturing environments for children. Through coordinated case planning and support, it aims to strengthen parenting capacity, build resilience, and promote long-term positive outcomes.

The Child & Family Practitioner plays a key role in delivering assertive outreach and intensive case management. They assist families in addressing immediate needs, coordinating holistic supports, and fostering sustainable change. Collaboration with Child Protection and other stakeholders is central to achieving these outcomes.

This role requires a highly motivated professional with strong communication skills and a commitment to working with vulnerable families. Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and a deep understanding of culturally safe, trauma-informed practice, are essential to delivering respectful and effective support.

As part of your role, you will be working with children, people with a disability and people who are vulnerable. It is your obligation to always ensure their safety and report any concerns in line with our duty of care obligations. We have zero tolerance when it comes to abuse of any kind and will take disciplinary action, including and up to termination of employment, should we determine that abuse has taken place or there has been a failure to report any suspected or alleged abuse.

Responsibilities


• Deliver high quality intensive case management with families across the scope of early intervention through to statutory child protection involvement.


• Develop a case plan and co-ordinate a range of appropriate interagency support services as identified in the case plan.


• Develop and manage relationships with key stakeholders including Child Protection, and other support services.


• Knowledge and application of culturally safe and trauma informed practices to support outcomes.


• Support families to make positive changes that are sustainable by empowering families to make decisions about their own lives.


• Advocating for the best interests of families, through case planning and coordination by ensuring documentation, record keeping and reporting is current.


• Ensure compliance with statutory requirements and Tangentyere organisational objectives.


• Assist with achieving quality management objectives across the organisation.


• Assist with achieving safeguarding objectives across the organisation.


• Assist with achieving compliance objectives across the organisation.


• Other reasonable duties as required.

Qualifications and Selection Criteria

Required


• Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.


• Relevant tertiary qualification in Social Work, Counselling and/or extensive relevant experience.


• Demonstrated case management experience in child and family services sector or equivalent and an understanding of current NT legislation.


• Demonstrated ability to perform risk and safety assessments, case work and referrals to a high standard.


• A commitment to community led practice, trauma-informed and cultural safety in practice.


• Demonstrated understanding of family centred, child focused practice and strengths-based frameworks.


• Demonstrated strong administration, written skills, and ability to utilise electronic databases.


• Current NT Drivers Licence, NT Working with Children (Ochre) Card, satisfactory Police Check, and proof of full (3) vaccination against COVID-19.

Desired


• An understanding of Aboriginal culture as well as a broad range of contemporary issues affecting Central Australian Aboriginal people.


• Current First Aid Certificate, or ability & willingness to attain.


• Understanding of or certified in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention.
