Primary objective

To provide high quality clinical services under the guidance and supervision of specialist staff within the Operating Theatre

and Day Procedure units at Alice Springs Hospital.

Context statement

The Anaesthetics team support patients undergoing procedures and surgeries for General Surgery, Obstetrics, Gynaecology,

Diagnostic radiology procedures in children, Dental and Maxillo Facial procedures, Orthopaedic surgery, ENT,

Ophthalmology, Urology, and labour analgesia in maternity, Insertions of and maintenance of access for Dialysis, Central

Venous access and services for acute pain.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide high quality clinical care for patients presenting to the Perioperative units.

2. Manage patients attending the perioperative suites and day procedure unit under the supervision of consultants.

3. Participate in Pre Anaesthetic checks and Acute Pain Rounds.

4. Ensure adequate supervision of and participation in teaching and education programs for nursing staff, junior staff and

medical students.

  1. Participate in research, educational and professional development.
  2. Initiate and participate in quality assurance activities, peer review practices and continuing Medical Education.
  3. Participate in other activities as directed by the Head of department.
  4. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being

undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.

9. Participate in the assessment process of the training scheme for which they are enrolled.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Eligible for general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

2. Experience in anaesthetics for all types of surgery and specialities except cardiac surgery, excellent skills in regional

anaesthesia/analgesia and experience in Intensive Care

3. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to interact positively in a cross-cultural work

environment, as a team member.

4. Ability to work effectively as part of the multi-disciplinary team and an interest in and a commitment to improving

Indigenous health.

5. Demonstrated commitment to high quality patient care.

Desirable

1. A passion for rural, regional and Aboriginal healthcare.
