About Bunurong Land Council
BLCAC is the Registered Aboriginal Party (RAP) representing the Bunurong people of the South-Eastern Kulin Nation. We advocate for cultural heritage, land management, and community empowerment. Our work spans across Greater Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula, and the Bass Coast, ensuring the voices and traditions of our ancestors continue to be recognised and respected.
About the RoleBLCAC is seeking a passionate and community-minded Strong Country Ranger (Fire) to support the delivery of cultural burning practices and fire management activities across Bunurong Country.
Working under the direction of the Strong Country Ranger Team Leader (Fire), this role will help build BLCAC's capacity to plan and implement fire management strategies that reflect both cultural and ecological values.
You will work collaboratively with Traditional Owners, the Strong Country team, and partner agencies to protect and restore Bunurong Country through fire management, pest control, and wildlife conservation. This role is ideal for someone with hands-on experience in land management who is committed to caring for Country, culture, and community.
Key Responsibilities- Assist with the safe and effective planning and delivery of cultural and ecological fire management practices on Bunurong Country.
- Support and mentor Strong Country Rangers in fire management activities and cultural burning programs.
- Collaborate with Forest Fire Management Victoria (DEECA), Country Fire Authority (CFA), and other RAPs, government, and non-government partners on joint fire initiatives.
- Contribute to the monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of fire and land management programs, including mapping, GIS activities, and data collection.
Participate in pest and invasive species management, wildlife conservation, and habitat restoration projects. - Safely operate, maintain, and care for tools, vehicles, and equipment.
Work flexibly across projects within the Strong Country team and adapt to changes in work programs as required. - Engage respectfully with community members, landholders, and stakeholders to strengthen cultural and environmental outcomes.
What You Bring
Qualifications and Experience
- Demonstrated experience in fire management, preferably including involvement in cultural burning practices.
- Relevant qualifications in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or equivalent experience.
- Experience working with Traditional Owners and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
- General understanding of Victorian land, water, coast, and marine management policiesand how they relate to Traditional Owner Corporations.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, SharePoint, Teams) and digital mapping tools. - Current Victorian Driver's Licence.
- Clear Working with Children Check and National Police Check, or willingness to obtain.
Desirable:
• Chainsaw Licence (Tree Felling desirable).
• AgVet Chemical Users Permit.
• 4x4 driving experience.
