The Role

This position supports Court Magistrates in identifying and diverting defendants who have, or are suspected of having, a mental illness, mental disorder, or cognitive impairment away from the criminal justice system and into appropriate community-based care. Working across court and correctional settings, the role aims to facilitate access to support services that address underlying health needs.

Candidates must have a relevant postgraduate qualification in mental health, hold a current NSW Driver Licence, and be willing to travel as part of the role.

Our Service and Team

Statewide Community and Court Liaison Service (SCCLS) delivered by Justice Health NSW offers mental health support in Local Courts across NSW. This service conducts thorough evaluations and, when suitable, offers suggestions to magistrates for diverting individuals away from custody and into suitable treatment options.

The SCCLS is currently expanding to include 58 local courts in rural, regional, and metro locations.

  1. Five years clinical experience, including three years in an acute mental health setting with post graduate qualifications in mental health.

  2. Proven advanced mental health assessment, risk assessment and diagnostic interviews skills and a working knowledge of the NSW Mental Health Legislation.

  3. Proven clinical leadership skills including highly developed negotiation, problem solving skills and advanced written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
