Primary objective

Provide regional engagement and support services for developing broadacre cropping opportunities in the Northern

Territory. The Cropping Engagement and Adoption Officer will achieve this objective guided by Strategic Plan of the

Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and supported by a network of professional and technical staff.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Assist in the development and implementation of an engagement plan to work with local communities, current and

potential stakeholders in relation to broadacre cropping in the Northern Territory.

2. Following Free, Prior and Informed Consent, engage with local development corporations, land councils and landowners

to build and maintain effective relationships to develop a sound understanding of sustainable agricultural opportunities,

particularly in the context of future demand for food and other agricultural products.

  1. Work with participating local communities to establish demonstration sites of crops of interest on their land, collect and

analyse data, and prepare reports.

  1. Coordinate and attend community events and consultations, and highlight opportunities for commercial cropping

opportunities in the Northern Territory.

  1. Report success stories of agribusiness development outcomes through appropriate communications channels like

newsletters, bulletins, and social media to participating communities and stakeholders.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Bachelor degree in social science, agricultural science or equivalent with relevant work experience.

2. Experience of application of Free, Prior and Informed Consent and human research ethics principles.

  1. First-hand experience in working with local communities and Aboriginal Corporations on projects to achieve economic,

environmental, and social sustainability.

4. Experience in planning and delivering extension to primary industries with capacity to establish networks and credibility

within local communities, Government agency and industry stakeholders.

5. Ability to effectively communicate the results of data-driven crop field trials to stakeholders and provide guidance on

potential practice changes.

6. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, sound ability to meet reporting requirements and obligations and

to contribute to strategy, program and policy development.

7. NT Driver's Licence or equivalent.

Desirable

1. Postgraduate or graduate study in social science, agricultural science or equivalent and relevant work experience.

2. Excellent interpersonal skills including an ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures, including the ability

to work in teams.

3. Showing initiative, self-motivation and overcoming challenges with out-of-the-box ideas.
