About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated clinician to lead the prosthetic service at one of Melbourne's leading tertiary hospitals. In this temporary leadership role, you will oversee the delivery of expert clinical care for amputees accessing services at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne (SVHM).

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a complex inpatient and outpatient prosthetic caseload across all amputation levels, including hands-on technical work as required

  • Provide clinical leadership, supervision and support to clinicians, technicians, administrative staff and students

  • Contribute as part of the department leadership team, supporting the Chief Prosthetist/Orthotist in operational management and service delivery

  • Lead and participate in service planning, education, quality improvement and strategic initiatives

Classifications for this position will range from CP10 – CP13 ($104, $118,981.20 per annum).

About You

  • Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics (or equivalent)

  • Eligibility for Australian Orthotic Prosthetic Association membership

  • Current NDIS Worker Screening Check (or willingness to obtain)

  • Extensive clinical experience providing prosthetic care for amputees

  • Leadership skills to support required responsibilities

  • Experience delivering services as a National Disability Insurance Scheme provider

About the Prosthetics and Orthotics Department

The Prosthetics & Orthotics Department at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne (SVHM) is based at the Fitzroy campus and also operates clinics at St George's Health Service in Kew. Our large, dynamic team provides comprehensive services across acute, subacute, outpatient and community settings.

Our expanding prosthetic service delivers care across all aspects of amputee management, including complex and specialist cohorts such as clients from the Sarcoma Service and Correctional Health.

3. LOCAL WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Prosthetic and Orthotic Department at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne (SVHM) is primarily based at the Fitzroy campus, however also operates clinics out of St George's Health Service (SGHS) in Kew. The department provides an extensive range of services across the acute, subacute, outpatient and community areas. Prosthetic services are generally provided at the Fitzroy campus, and include:

  • Pre-amputation consultation in inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Post-operative amputee management
  • Prosthetic rehabilitation in inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Coordination of weekly multi-disciplinary Amputee Clinic
  • High end definitive outpatient prosthetic management, through various funding schemes, including;
  • National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Victorial Artifical Limb Program (VALP), Traffic accident 
  • commission (TAC) and Work Cover (WC).
  • Management of unique and complex patient cohort, including clients from specialist Sarcoma Service and Correctional Health
  • Coordination of La Trobe University student placements

4. POSITION PURPOSE

  • To provide expert clinical care for all amputees requiring services through SVHM
  • To provide clinical leadership, supervision and support to junior clinicians, technicians, administrative assistants and students
  • To form part of the department leadership team and support the chief prosthetist orthotist in all areas of service delivery
  • To contribute to strategy, planning, service development and quality improvement initiatives.

POSITION DUTIES 

  • Oversee the Victorian Artificial Limb Program (VALP) and prosthetic services funded through other bodies such as the NDIS, TAC and WC.
  • Complete monthly reports as part of the Department of Health requirements
  • Conduct monthly budget review and analysis of budget variances with Chief Prosthetist/Orthotist
  • Coordinate all areas of prosthetic workflow to ensure a high standard and timely provision of care
  • Provide support and guidance to all prosthetic staff to deliver services across acute, rehabilitation and outpatient clinics 
  • Support the Chief P&O to contribute to strategy, planning and service development as part of the department leadership team 
  • Manage a caseload of complex prosthetic outpatients (of all amputation levels), including technical work as required
  • Triage incoming referrals, working closely with the broader multi-disciplinary team
  • Oversee weekly multidisciplinary amputee clinic to ensure optimal function and service for all clients
  • Identify changes to funding streams and policy which affect service provision; review systems and processes and implement improvements as appropriate
  • Ensure updates to policies and procedures that reflect current standards of practice
  • Coordinate Prosthetic research activities and quality improvement initiatives within the Prosthetic and Orthotic Department
  • Proactively seek continuous professional development activities to maintain the highest level of evidence based best practice
  • Assist in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of allied health, medical and nursing staff, as required.

6. INCUMBENT OBLIGATIONS

  • Ensure consumers are aware of their rights responsibilities and how to provide feedback
  • Protect the health and safety of self and others, complying with all health and safety related policies, procedures and directions
  • Complete required Fire and Emergency Training annually
  • Complete required Workplace Culture and Equity Training annually
  • Attend general hospital orientation within 3 months of commencement
  • As required, comply with fit-testing and PPE requirements

8. SELECTION CRITERIA
8.1 ESSENTIAL REGISTRATION, LICENSE OR QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics (or equivalent)
  • Member of Australian Orthotic Prosthetic Association
  • National Disability Insurance Scheme Worker Screening clearance

8.2 OTHER ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Extensive knowledge, skills and experience in prosthetic and orthotic service provision for amputees
  • Minimum 7 years of experience working as a Prosthetist
  • Experience working as a National Disability Insurance Scheme provide
  • Experience in the leadership and supervision of staff and students
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills incorporating excellent communication, organisational, negotiation and conflict management skills

8.3 OTHER NON ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience working as a Senior Prosthetist
  • Post graduate qualification relevant to Prosthetics and Orthotics, leadership or management.
  • Demonstrable evidence of participation in relevant Prosthetic and Orthotic courses, conferences and professional development programs.
