Where the team fits in
The role sits within the Property Core Squad in PropTrack. PropTrack provides property data and technical platform solutions to customers in the financial and government sectors. The Engineering Team within PropTrack works together to deliver solutions to our internal and external customers. It is the core delivery centre for developing solutions to meet customer priorities and align with PropTrack's technology strategy.
Property Core Squad is a team that is responsible for core components of Proptrack and REA's property data vision. It looks after systems responsible for address matching and maintains key property datasets for the wider business. The team is unique in the way it balances both data engineering and software engineering skills. The team leverages best practices and follows a strong culture of technical excellence advocated by the REA tech community. The team also collaborates with other important stakeholders in the business including other teams that provide our foundational property data and relies on common REA platforms for deployment, infrastructure, logging, monitoring, alerting and analytics.
What The Role Is All About
- Working closely with a team of Data Engineers, a BA, a QA, an Engineering Manager and a Product Manager to deliver great outcomes for Proptrack's property data products as well as empower the wider REA business.
- Designing, implementing, testing and deploying complex data architectures and APIs using a variety of technologies and platforms.
- Being a Staff Engineer, you will be helping to lead the technical aspects of projects, initiatives (or slices), taking these projects from the pre-discovery stage all the way through to production.
- Again, as a Staff Engineer, you will be helping to support, guide and grow less experienced technical team members, being a go-to person for them to work with to learn and grow individually.
- Continually assess and improve the health of our system guided by REA's system health rating methodology, ensure we adopt best practices and contribute and maintain our open and collaborative culture.
- Working in a wider agile team with other developers, business analysts, quality analysts, product managers & product designers where we value iterative experimentation and data driven decisions.
- Learning and contributing to the tech community. We are constantly learning together, mentoring each other and striving to do things better.
- Work with product to understand business priorities and communicate technical options, report on progress and express ideas.
Who We're Looking For
- Minimum 5-7 years' experience working in data engineering, with a proven track record in building reliable, performant and scalable data applications and pipelines. Experience in a similar role is ideal.
- Developed skills include modern data engineering techniques such as data modelling, data pipelines, data streaming, data consumption, etc.
- Proficient in Python, SQL, Typescript. Some experience in Scala is preferred.
- Experience in data tools like Apache Kafka, Apache Airflow, Apache Flink, Pandas, GCP BigQuery, Apache Spark would be ideal.
- Experience in the property industry/with domain knowledge is a bonus.
- You possess hands-on experience in data engineering design patterns and have an adept understanding of data architectures.
- You have supported systems deployed to the cloud and have advanced skills in designing solutions for scale and performance.
- Your expertise includes API development, distributed event-driven systems architectures, and cloud offerings.
- You thrive in fast-paced, agile environments and exhibit strong communication skills, demonstrating a solutions-focused mindset.
- Experience as a mentor or similar is key for this role.
