Systems Engineer

Located at Defence, the branch is responsible for delivering high-quality, innovative, timely, and focused live, virtual, and constructive training to ensure Australian Defence Force elements are fully prepared for operational success. The Systems Engineer will be part of the Simulation Services Directorate, which manages simulation systems within the branch to support simulation architectures, networks, and systems vital for training events.

Role Requirements:

  • Accountable to the Chief Engineer for executing engineering activities aligned with requirements, standards, and frameworks.
  • Operate within governance and direction, following systems engineering principles.

Deliverables:

  1. Comply with Simulation Technical Assurance Manual (STAM) Policy and ITSM Policy.
  2. Follow directed systems engineering procedures meeting all applicable standards.
  3. Contribute to planning, development, and execution of engineering tasks.
  4. Conduct requirements elicitation and translate business needs into technical specifications.
  5. Support implementation, change control, and documentation of systems engineering activities.
  6. Produce engineering deliverables for technical reviews and implement outcomes.
  7. Conduct engineering analysis and investigations for change proposals.
  8. Assure Test & Evaluation (T&E) plans and activities meet required standards.
  9. Participate in Defence technical meetings and provide lifecycle systems engineering advice.
  10. Support process improvement activities, including ITSM alignment.
  11. Serve as a key contact for engineering activities under the direction of the Chief Engineer.

Skills:

Mandatory:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Systems Engineering, ICT, Communications Network Design and Test, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • ITIL Foundations Certificate.
  • Extensive experience in:
  • Multi-discipline engineering development within Defence or related regulatory environments.
  • ICT and simulation systems design, capacity management, and testing.
  • Developing technical documentation and engineering methodologies.
  • Configuration, data, and change management processes.
  • Highly complex ICT environments.
  • Engineering documentation including design, requirements, testing, and baselines.

Desired:

  • Knowledge of Live/Virtual/Constructive simulation models and taxonomy.
  • Understanding of Command and Control (C4I) concepts, messaging protocols, HLA, and DIS.
  • Familiarity with IEEE DSEEP.
  • Understanding of Defence training exercise lifecycles and doctrine.
  • Experience in ADF training solution and exercise delivery.
  • Experience as a Design Authority within ICT technical regulatory frameworks.
  • Product lifecycle management experience.
