Overview Of Position
The job of Parent Education Laboratory Associate is done for the purpose(s) of providing instruction, care and supervision to infants and toddlers enrolled in the Parent Education Laboratory. Preference will be given to applicants with Early Childhood Education coursework and experience such as one-year minimum working as a lead teacher with toddlers in a childcare center.
The person(s) selected for this position will be responsible for conducting developmental milestone observations and organizing and setting up classroom environment; as well as implementing curriculum lessons. This is an 8-hour workday (1.0 FTE) position.
Additional responsibilities include: Childcare Early Learning support; implementing infant and toddler curriculum lessons. Feeding, diapering, comforting children. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Ability to get up and down from floor unassisted. Supervising outdoor play time, walking trips, naptime, meals and snacks. Center cleaning duties as required.
Essential Functions
- Assists the team in planning and providing developmentally appropriate care and learning activities to infants and toddlers, for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts and by caring for student's needs.
- Distributes instructional and/or play materials for the purpose of providing students with necessary items and assisting the site supervisor in the classroom.
- Maintains classroom equipment, work areas, student files/records (e.g. instructional materials, cleaning work area, kitchen area, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the health and safety of participants.
- Monitors student behavior for the purpose of ensuring student compliance with established program and referring students to off-site agency staff as appropriate.
- Participates in staff development activities (e.g. site visits, team meetings/conferences, staff/agency meetings, etc.) for the purpose of learning new procedures, problem solving techniques and discussing participants progress.
- Provides care for infants and toddlers (e.g. diapering, potty training, feeding, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring care under program guidelines.
- Responds to inquires from a variety of sources for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information and/or direction.
Other Functions
- Communicates with school staff (e.g. principal, office personnel, visitors, etc.) for the purpose of conveying information and/or receiving information required to perform the functions of the job.
- Performs related duties consistent with the scope of the position.
Reporting Relationships
Reports to Principal, assigned school and Manager, School to Work.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Skills are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.
- Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: managing and maintaining infant and toddlers activities; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
- Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems.
- Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: appropriate codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; age appropriate activities; and stages of child development.
- Ability is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment.
- Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using defined methods.
- Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans.
- Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited.
- Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: relating and working with infants and teenager/young adults.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the Organization's services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 30% sitting, 20% walking, and 50% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Education
Typical Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent and at least one of the following:
- Have received a qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment as published by PESB; or(b) Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university; or(c) Have earned seventy-two quarter credits or forty-eight semester credits at the one hundred level or higher at an accredited college or university; or(d) Have completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
Experience
One (1) year of work experience providing care and instruction to very young children in a group-care setting.
Substitution
Additional qualifying work experience may substitute on a month-for-month basis for the education requirement.
Required Testing
Current TB test and evidence of a current physical examination prior to working with children.
Certifications & Licenses
First Aid certificate; Food Handler's Permit; Valid State of Washington Driver's License or evidence of equivalent mobility
