About the Role

  • Site is located in Ipswich
  • Full time, 38hrs/week
  • Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:06pm
  • 12-month fixed term contract

As an Our Families Our Way (Delegated Authority) / Family Participation Practitioner, you will deliver an accountable, effective, and culturally strong service to reduce the disproportionate representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in the child protection system.

Your role is to provide independent, culturally safe support to families when child protection concerns are raised, ensuring children's safety while empowering families to participate in decision-making. You will lead Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family-led decision making (FLDM) processes, uphold the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principle, and strengthen community connections through self-determination and collaboration.

This is an Identified Position – Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independent Facilitation & Case Planning

  • Meet with referred families to clarify Delegated Authority functions and powers.

  • Facilitate independent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family-led decision making (FLDM).
  • Collaborate with families to develop case plans that address unmet needs and child protection concerns.
  • Conduct family mapping to identify support networks and maintain cultural and family connections.
  • Prepare and facilitate family planning sessions and formal FLDM meetings, ensuring all voices are heard.
  • Child Safety & Family Support

  • Support families to understand Child Safety processes and safety concerns.

  • Provide support that enables families to actively contribute to decisions about their children.
  • Link families with internal and external support services to implement and sustain family plans.
  • Contribute to assessments and prepare reports for stakeholder meetings.
  • Cultural Authority & Community Empowerment

  • Uphold self-determination and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principle.

  • Ensure that children's voices and families' perspectives inform all plans and decisions.
  • Promote culturally safe practice and whole-of-family approaches in service delivery.
  • Collaboration & Professional Practice

  • Work closely with Child Safety, community organisations, and internal teams to coordinate holistic care.

  • Cultivate effective relationships based on trust, respect, and collaboration.
  • Participate in performance-driven practice, achieving agreed weekly, monthly, and quarterly outcomes.
  • Mentor and guide staff in cultural, trauma-informed, and strengths-based practices.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Bachelor's degree in social work, Human Services, Social Science, Community Services, Family Intervention or Criminology with 5 years' relevant experience; OR
  • Diploma in Community Services, Social Work, Human Services, Child and Family, Child and Family Intervention with 3 years' relevant experience.
  • Minimum 1 year in a case management role.
  • Demonstrated experience working in child protection, family services, or early intervention.
  • Strong understanding of the factors contributing to vulnerability, disengagement, and intergenerational trauma.
  • Demonstrated ability to build family agency, self-efficacy, and empowerment, while discouraging dependence on services.
  • Experience coordinating multiple services to provide holistic care across housing, education, health, mental health, substance use, and employment.
  • High-level skills in assessment, case planning, and facilitating behaviour change interventions.
  • Strong cultural competency in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families, and communities.

Desirable

  • Experience in providing good news stories or case outcomes where family participation influenced child safety decisions positively.
  • Familiarity with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principle and FLDM processes.

Mandatory Requirements

  • Current open driver's licence and ability to travel across program locations.
  • Working with Children's Check (Blue Card) or eligibility to obtain.
  • National Police Check.
  • Flexibility to work outside 8am–4:06pm business hours when required.
