AEMO at the Heart of Energy

AEMO is Australia's independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO's purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians.  Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.

About the role

The AEMO Operations Division is responsible for ensuring continued secure efficient operation of the National Electricity Market (NEM) while enabling the transition of the power system towards 100% renewables.

As a key member of the Operations Division, you will drive risk understanding and awareness, improve operational resilience and compliance, and enhance risk maturity across the business. You will embed best practices and ensure alignment with regulatory obligations, corporate frameworks and strategic objectives, and contribute to and help shape our future operations change agenda, bringing a risk and compliance focus and supported by our enterprise risk function.

If you thrive in dynamic environments, love turning frameworks into meaningful outcomes, and want to champion an embedded, smart risk and compliance culture—this role has your name on it.

What you will be doing

  • Lead initiatives to strengthen the division's risk and compliance culture and maturity, promoting proactive risk identification and management
  • Conduct risk assessments, control testing, and compliance reviews to identify emerging threats and operational gaps particularly in terms of transition planning and future operability of our gas and electricity systems.
  • Partner with operations management and teams to understand risks, and to design and implement effective risk mitigation strategies, and to embed the risk mitigations appropriately in our organisation.
  • Oversight of compliance with internal policies, procedures, and external regulations, ensuring timely escalation and resolution of non-compliance. Support root cause analysis post incidents to drive continuous improvement and a linkage with risk management.
  • Prepare insightful risk and compliance reporting for senior leadership and governance committees as required supporting audit action reporting.

What you will bring to the role

  • Tertiary qualifications in engineering, or related field.
  • GRC (Governance Risk and Compliance System) experience.
  • Strong experience in the Energy sector with an understanding of energy systems, operational risk, compliance and control assurance practices
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and influencing skills, and the ability to translate complex concepts into operationally relevant guidance
  • Analytical mindset with a pragmatic, solutions-focused approach

In return some of our benefits to you

  • Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options

  • Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.

  • Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.

  • Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).

  • Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
