Senior Linux Infrastructure Engineer

General:
This is a contract role with a very high profile Federal Government agency.
This role will prove to be both interesting and rewarding to the successful applicant.
Security level - mandatory: minimum federal Baseline security clearance required.
Location – Sydney CBD office.
WFH – generally, 2 days in office / 3 days WFH each week.
Start – estimated: mid to late November 2025.
Initial contract duration – 12 months.
Extension expected – 12 months.
The Role:
This Linux Engineer role will be part of the Technology and Platform Solutions Team. It is for a Linux Engineer who is very experienced, and able toimplement, manage and retire the infrastructure (including physical, virtual, networking and cloud infrastructure) that supports digital services. So, key things are to ensure the server environment is secure, stable and effectively maintained.
Key duties:
- Run and maintain the client's core IT services, upon which all other IT services are based. This includes data centres, servers, virtualization, operating systems, storage, backup, time, logging, email, domain name resolution, web proxying and security.
- Securely manage client's connections to/from the internet and other government networks.
- Perform daily security monitoring and risk mitigations across the client's IT environment.
You will be part of a technical team that has the responsibility for the design, implementation, maintenance and security of:
- All of the Linux hosts (approx primarily Ubuntu, with some RHEL.
Base infrastructure services consumed by other IT teams, such as:
Virtualisation (VMware),
- Block and file storage (Pure Storage),
- Backup (Cohesity) and
- Index/search (Splunk).
Core applications relied on, such as:
DNS (BIND),
- NTP,
- SMTP (Postfix),
- Web proxying (Squid and Forcepoint/Websense), and
- RSA SecurID.
You will be working in a secure on-premise environment, and work will include working on business driven and internally driven projects.
You will be responsible for the complete end-to-end process that can include: infrastructure design, procurement, racking, and then all the way through to service delivery.
You also will work closely with other technical teams (Development, Platforms, Networks, Windows, Service Desk) to identify and resolve issues and escalations.
Technical skills:
Essential
- Extensive experience managing a large fleet of Linux hosts (in a team environment).
- Providing organisation-wide base infrastructure and core services.
- Demonstrable Ansible (or similar tool) automation skills for infrastructure deployment & management.
- Experience in problem solving, troubleshooting, documentation & root cause analysis.
Desirable
- A deep understanding of Linux, including networking, package mgt, auditd, SElinux/AppArmor, TLS, PKI, and IPTABLES/NFTABLES.
- Experience in implementing the ACSC's Essential Eight in a Linux environment.
