About the Team
When you join the Infrastructure Projects team, you'll join a group of professionals delivering Australia's future rail network. To help grow rail transport in Australia, the team is focused on ensuring the delivery of critical construction projects across the country, including implementation of our $1 billion Network Investment Program that we've developed with the Australian Government. Whether it's designing, building or maintaining crucial rail infrastructure, the team plays a pivotal role in our ongoing efforts to improve network resilience and keep the future of freight on track.
About the Opportunity
Reporting to the Rail Systems Manager and supporting the Infrastructure Projects team, the Senior Project Engineer Rail Systems will lead the delivery of rail signalling systems across all phases of capital projects, including the Network Investment Program (NIP). The role covers early investigations, approvals, scope and design development, construction, testing, and commissioning, while ensuring compliance with technical, safety, and environmental standards.
The Senior Project Engineer will provide engineering management of rail systems elements across multiple projects in various phases, maintaining oversight at a program level while also having the capability to hone in and support the resolution of complex technical issues at a detailed level. With a strong focus on signalling design, the role requires a thorough understanding of signalling principles and the design process.
The responsibilities include:
- Provide specialist rail systems and signalling leadership across all project phases from feasibility and design through construction, commissioning, and closeout ensuring compliance with ARTC, ONRSR and industry standards.
- Oversee technical assurance, design governance, and configuration management, ensuring scope definitions, signalling designs, and engineering practices are robust, compliant, and aligned with operational and functional requirements.
- Maintain strategic program-level oversight across multiple concurrent projects, ensuring scope, schedule, cost, risk, and safety baselines are supported through sound technical input and proactive issue resolution.
- Guide and monitor contractor performance through design reviews, deliverable oversight, possession planning, commissioning, and handover activities, ensuring delivery momentum, safety, and quality outcomes are achieved.
- Foster collaboration and stakeholder alignment across project teams, contractors, design consultants, and ARTC Operations, while providing escalation pathways, on-the-ground support, and mentoring to project engineers.
- Promote a strong safety and compliance culture, driving risk management, defect resolution, and continuous improvement across ARTC's Infrastructure Projects portfolio.
What do we want from you?
Selection Criteria:
- Signalling & Rail Systems Expertise - 8+ years' experience across design, construction, testing and commissioning of major rail infrastructure projects, with compliance to ARTC, adjacent RIM and Australian standards.
- Qualifications & Competency - ARTC Signalling Statement of Competency (Electrician/ Design/Engineer/Manager roles) with experience and qualifications commensurate with the role and responsibilities, Including, Cert IV in Electrical Rail Signalling (or equivalent), RIW Card, White Card, Class C licence; postgraduate or IRSE qualifications desirable.
- Project Delivery & Compliance - Skilled in scope development, design management, configuration management, operational readiness, installation/test/commissioning documentation and asset strategy with strong WHS and rail safety compliance.
- Technical & Standards Knowledge - Proven competency in signalling, communications and electrical systems, including vital interlockings (Westrace, Westlok, SSI, Microlok II, HIMA, relay), level crossing systems, telemetry and train control systems.
- Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement - Strong project management, problem-solving and commercial skills, with the ability to lead teams, manage competing priorities and collaborate across disciplines.
