About the role

We are seeking an experienced Solution Architect with proven expertise in Cloud architectures and Zero Trust security models to operate Above the Line (ATL) on a major Australian Government program.

You will work within the client-side advisory and governance function, providing strategic architecture oversight, ensuring solutions align with business outcomes, security requirements, and whole-of-government standards. The role is governance and assurance-focused rather than hands-on delivery, with a strong emphasis on ensuring secure, scalable, and compliant designs from multiple delivery partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with program managers, business analysts, and technical leads to translate business requirements into secure and scalable Cloud solution architectures.
  • Develop and maintain Solution Architecture Documents (SADs), integration models, and security patterns.
  • Provide architectural oversight to multiple delivery partners, ensuring solutions meet the Zero Trust architecture principles, cloud security frameworks, and program objectives.
  • Evaluate solution proposals for compliance with:
  • Australian Government ISM, PSPF, and Essential Eight
  • Zero Trust security principles (least privilege, micro-segmentation, continuous verification)
  • Cloud governance, interoperability, and performance standards
  • Lead architecture governance forums and present recommendations to executive and technical boards.
  • Identify and manage solution-level risks, dependencies, and trade-offs, especially relating to cloud migration and security.
  • Contribute technical input into procurement, tender evaluations, and partner assessments.
  • Ensure architecture designs are forward-compatible with emerging technologies and whole-of-government ICT strategy.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 8+ years' experience in solution architecture, with at least 3 years in Australian Government or Defence environments.
  • Demonstrated expertise in:
  • Designing and governing secure Cloud solutions (Azure, AWS, GovCloud)
  • Zero Trust security architectures and modern identity/access management models
  • Large-scale enterprise solution integration and interoperability
  • Experience operating Above the Line, providing solution governance and partner/vendor oversight.
  • Strong knowledge of enterprise architecture frameworks (TOGAF, ArchiMate, MODAF, or equivalent).
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Defence experience and familiarity with Defence Architecture Framework (DAF).
  • Cloud security certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified, Cybersecurity Architect, Google Cloud, AWS Security Specialty).
  • TOGAF, SABSA, or other recognised architecture certifications.
  • Experience in multi-vendor program delivery models.
