Maintenance Fitter - Fibreglass Workshop
Pay Rate: Depending on Experience
Position Summary:
The Maintenance Fitter is responsible for the preventative and reactive maintenance of all plant, equipment, and machinery within a fast-paced fibreglass manufacturing workshop. The successful candidate will be a skilled and reliable tradesperson with a strong focus on safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement. They will possess a solid understanding of mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and be capable of working independently and as part of a team to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the facility.
Key Responsibilities:
Preventative Maintenance:
Execute scheduled preventative maintenance tasks on all workshop machinery, including but not limited to:
- Fibreglass spray-up equipment (choppers, resin pumps, catalyst pumps)
- Resin mixing and dispensing systems
- Extraction and ventilation systems (dust and fume)
- Lifting equipment (cranes, hoists, forklifts - where licensed)
- Compressors and air systems
- General workshop machinery (saws, drills, grinders, etc.)
- Follow and update preventative maintenance schedules and checklists.
- Record all maintenance activities and component changes accurately.
- Reactive Maintenance & Breakdown Response:
Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and some electrical faults on production equipment.
- Perform timely and effective repairs to minimize production downtime.
- Utilize schematics, technical manuals, and diagnostic tools to identify and resolve issues.
- Communicate with the production team regarding equipment status and expected repair times.
- Participate in an on-call roster for emergency breakdowns, if required.
Fabrication & Installation:
Fabricate and install new equipment, machinery, or components as needed.
- Modify existing machinery to improve performance, safety, or efficiency.
- Work with various materials including mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminium.
- Perform welding, cutting, and grinding as per safety procedures.
Safety & Compliance:
Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
- Conduct pre-start checks and risk assessments before commencing work.
- Ensure a high standard of housekeeping in the workshop and maintenance areas.
- Report all hazards, incidents, and near misses immediately.
- Comply with environmental regulations related to waste and chemical handling.
Inventory & Documentation:
Maintain an inventory of critical spare parts and components.
- Liaise with the Maintenance Manager to order new parts and supplies.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date maintenance records, logbooks, and service reports.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Hold a recognized trade qualification as a Fitter and Turner, Mechanical Fitter, or equivalent.
- Proven experience as a maintenance fitter in a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment.
- Experience in a fibreglass, composites, or chemical manufacturing environment is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Experience with PLC systems and basic electrical fault-finding is a plus.
- Forklift license and other relevant licenses are an advantage.

Working Conditions:
- The role is primarily based in a fibreglass manufacturing workshop.
- The environment may involve exposure to dust, fumes, and chemicals, and will require the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- The role may require working at heights and in confined spaces.
- Overtime and weekend work may be required to meet production demands or address breakdowns.
