Overview
Our Food Environments Team are seeking a skilled and innovative Senior Geospatial Specialist with expertise in ESRI's ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online to join our NHMRC-funded Australian Food Atlas project (AFA). This unique and innovative project will be the first in Australia to comprehensively map, measure and monitor food access across jurisdictions, creating a national 'Food Atlas' that maps, measures and monitors food access across Australia. Designed around the needs of professionals in food policy, public health, and planning roles, our AFA will spatially visualise a community's ability to access food, identifying the people and places with limited access to healthy food and/or an over-abundance of unhealthy food. This unique level of evidence will be used to inform food and nutrition policy and surveillance, support planning decisions and future policy direction to create equitable, health-promoting communities that foster healthy eating.

This role involves leveraging advanced geospatial technologies and programming skills to analyse spatial data, develop geospatial solutions, produce high quality maps and support decision-making processes whilst working on the AFA. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in the creation, integration, manipulation, and analysis of spatial data, ideally in Public Health or health related fields, development and maintenance of scripts to assist data processing, and have hands-on experience with ArcGIS software.

Key Responsibilities
Geospatial Data Analysis:

  • Utilise ArcGIS Pro and other GIS software if required, to convert datasets of food business addresses and classifications into maps summarising food access in local government areas across Australia. Update maps annually with new datasets.
  • Source and analyse complementary spatial data such as school zones, mesh bocks, health outcomes and population demographics.
  • Utilise ArcGIS Pro to perform advanced spatial analysis, create detailed geospatial layers and make visualisation adjustments for the AFA online dashboards.
  • Integrate external datasets such as ABS data with the AFA maps to undertake data analysis to calculate metrics for the AFA online dashboards such as percentage of fast-food businesses per 10,000 people, or temporal changes in food businesses.
  • Utilise ArcGIS Online to create AFA dashboards that visualise each food business in every local government area in each Australian state. Develop charts, lists, indicators, and interactive maps, and design visually appealing, user-friendly dashboards for various food business classifications, such as fast-food outlets.
  • Manage a large number of geospatial files, ensuring data integrity and accuracy.
  • Deliver oral presentations to AFA stakeholders and various audiences, including webinars, workshops, and conferences.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to understand their geospatial needs and deliver tailored dashboards and other solutions.
  • Provide geospatial services to other projects within the Food Environments Team as required.
  • Software Development and Integration:
  • Design, develop, and implement custom geospatial solutions using programming languages such as Python, R, or JavaScript.
  • Integrate geospatial data with other systems and applications through APIs and SDKs.
  • Maintain and enhance existing geospatial processes and workflows.
Project Management and Collaboration:
  • Collaborate in a team environment to understand project requirements and deliver geospatial insights.
  • Provide technical support and training to team members and stakeholders on geospatial tools and techniques.
  • Maintain user guides for the AFA dashboards for end-users and other GIS staff.
  • Manage geospatial project timelines, deliverables, and written documentation to meet agreed project deadlines
Research and Innovation:
  • Stay current with advancements in geospatial technology and public health research methodologies to bring innovative solutions to the AFA Team.
  • Maintain excellent knowledge of available datasets for spatial analysis.
  • Lead and contribute to writing and publishing summary reports and peer-reviewed journal articles using AFA data.
