Lead the transformation of technical training in a major public transport network.

Our client is seeking a strategic Training Manager to rebuild capability, drive compliance, and shape the future of workforce development across its maintenance operations.

The Company

We have recently partnered with an organisation that operates one of the largest light rail systems in the Southern Hemisphere, with a fleet of hundreds of vehicles and a workforce of thousands. Following a recent operational transition, they are investing heavily in safety, performance uplift, and workforce capability.

With a renewed focus on technical excellence and cultural transformation, they are delivering major upgrades while supporting a diverse and inclusive team.

The Role

This position offers the chance to lead a newly rebuilt training function within the Rolling Stock division. Reporting to a senior strategy leader, you'll manage a team of five and oversee the development of training packages, competency frameworks, and onboarding pathways for a workforce of over 300.

The role is pivotal to aligning technical capability with classification structures and performance outcomes, while supporting compliance and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the training department
to deliver effective and compliant training programs.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive competency framework
aligned with industry standards to support workforce development.
  • Design individual training plans and onboarding procedures
    to ensure consistent employee integration.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders
including depot managers, engineering, and operations teams to identify training needs and improve workforce capability.
  • Drive continuous improvement
moving beyond compliance to measure learning outcomes and performance.
  • Manage and optimise training resources and facilities
, including exploring the feasibility of a centralised training academy.
  • Lead the digital transformation
    of training delivery.
  • Foster a positive team culture
, providing leadership and mentorship to develop a high-performing training team.
  • Report on training metrics and KPIs
to demonstrate the value and impact of training investments to senior management.

Requirements

  • Experience managing training in heavy industry or blue-collar environments.
  • Rail experience a plus, but open to candidates from other heavy industries.
  • Strong leadership skills and team-building skills.
  • Skilled in training needs analysis, competency frameworks, and individual training plans.
  • Track record of developing and implementing industry-aligned training programs.
  • Familiarity with digital learning tools and LMS; eager to drive digital transformation.
  • Effective stakeholder engagement across multiple lines of business.
  • Willing to travel across multiple sites (head office & depots).
