Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Australian Energy Market Operator Full time $90,000 - $120,000 per year

AEMO at the Heart of Energy

AEMO is Australia's independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO's purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and least-cost energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. AEMO with industry, government and consumers have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.

About the role

The Communications & Corporate Affairs team is the custodian of AEMO's reputation, and has a critical role in positioning AEMO with internal and external stakeholders.

As AEMO's dedicated speech writer, you'll be responsible for crafting speeches and presentations for the CEO and senior executives that resonate with key stakeholders, including industry, government, media, and the broader community. Your work will also include shaping long-form content for external publication, ranging from articles and opinion pieces to scripts for podcasts and videos, working closely with the broader communications team.

A fantastic opportunity to play a critical part in strengthening external understanding of AEMO's work across system and market operations, and planning. You'll help bring to life the challenges and opportunities in the energy transition, translating complex technical and policy information into compelling, accessible narratives.

What you will be doing

  • Develop speeches, talking points, and scripts for the CEO and Executive Leadership Team, to deliver at industry conferences, government briefings, and internal company events.

  • Collaborate closely with internal subject matter experts and your colleagues in the communications team to align messaging and tone with AEMO's brand and strategy.

  • Ensure consistency in messaging across external and internal platforms, helping to build trust and understanding with AEMO'S diverse audiences.

  • Work closely with the Media Manager to develop AEMO'S communications strategy, with particular focus on an annual plan for speaking opportunities and thought leadership for the Executive Leadership Team.

What you will bring to the role

  • A tertiary qualification in economics, communications, or public relations (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) is highly regarded and will support your success in this role.

  • A wealth of experience as a journalist or within the energy/infrastructure sector, particularly in external communications. Experience in a newsroom, regulated industry, or policy environment is well regarded.

  • Demonstrated experience crafting speeches and high-level content for executives, ideally within media, government, public policy or the energy sector.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, paired with a professional approach to engaging senior executives, are essential, alongside a demonstrated curiosity or passion for contributing to Australia's energy transition.

In return, some of our benefits to you:

  • Flexible working: work from home, part-time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options.

  • Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance, and more.

  • Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.

  • Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).

  • Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks, and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
