Job Description

About the team

The Technical Office within the Planning & Delivery Team consists of specialist engineers who provide expert advice on complex engineering designs across a range of projects and on various engineering assets at Sydney Airport. Acting as internal consultants, they support the business with technical guidance, ensuring projects are designed and delivered to meet operational, regulatory, and industry standards; as well as meet Sydney Airport specific requirements. Their expertise helps drive efficient, practical, and well-engineered solutions that support the airport's ongoing development.

About the role

You will have the chance to work on exciting new design projects as well as the maintenance and upgrade of existing structures, ensuring they meet safety and regulatory requirements.

As the Structural Design Manager, you will bring your expertise in building and civil structures to support various business units at Sydney Airport by:

  • Developing comprehensive knowledge of existing assets, including their demand, capacity, and resilience, in collaboration with the Asset Management and Spatial Teams. This includes establishing a Structural Survey protocol for all SYD buildings and structures.
  • Creating and maintaining design guidelines, performance briefs, standard details, and scopes of services to ensure consistency across multiple projects.
  • Providing valuable asset insights to support planning and business case development.
  • Assisting the design management team in ensuring design assurance by contributing to design problem-solving.
  • Providing support and input during the construction phase, including troubleshooting, additional inspections, and contributions to the staging plan.
  • Providing support to the Airport Operations and Facilities teams
  • Facilitating structural integrity assessments and implementing sustainable engineering practices
  • Developing strategic business cases, managing budgets, and obtaining senior executive approvals.

About you

We are looking for an experienced Structural Design engineer for a role that blends technical expertise with strategic vision and stakeholder engagement. We are seeking a candidate who is a continuous learner, innovative thinker, and a team player. You should excel in managing diverse stakeholders, have meticulous attention to detail, and thrive in fast-paced environments.

The ideal candidate will have the following experience, qualifications and attributes:

  • Tertiary Qualifications in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 10 years industry experience, particularly in Structural Engineering Design
  • Previous experience in developing strategic business cases, managing budgets, and obtaining senior executive approvals
  • Exposure to project management and delivery is preferred and exposure to operational environments is advantageous
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 collaborative tools and previous experience with CAD software like AutoCAD, Revit, or MicroStation is advantageous.
