The Opportunity:

This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference to the health and wellbeing of the Ngaanyatjarra people. As the Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Counsellor you will support clients aged 14 years and older, their families, and communities to reduce the harms and impacts of alcohol and other drug use across the Ngaanyatjarra Lands.

Working within the Mental Health and Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) team, you will provide counselling, education, and coordinate prevention strategies in a culturally safe and respectful way. You will work closely with self-referred clients and those referred through clinical or mental health services, while delivering community-based health promotion activities.

This full-time position on a 2 weeks on / 1 week off roster offers the chance to collaborate with Yarnangu workers and other service providers to ensure programs are community-led, effective, and sustainable. You will develop care plans, facilitate education sessions, coordinate prevention strategies, and mentor local staff to increase engagement.

About You:

Skilled professional who brings experience, cultural awareness, and a commitment to improving community wellbeing. You will have:

• Demonstrated high-level knowledge and understanding of the alcohol and other drugs (AOD) treatment sector and community support services.
• Minimum Diploma level qualification required; relevant Bachelor's degree preferred.
• Strong understanding of harm minimisation and recovery-oriented approaches, with the ability to provide trauma informed person-centred care.
• Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
• The ability to work respectfully, creatively, and effectively with Aboriginal people and communities in a culturally safe manner.
• Experience living and working in a remote Aboriginal community (highly regarded).
• Experience using electronic patient record systems.
• Current National Police Clearance, Working with Children Check (WA), and a valid WA Driver's Licence (or the ability to obtain).

Home to approximately 2000 Yarnangu (Ngaanyatjarra people) across 11 unique communities, our council is dedicated to preserving and celebrating our rich heritage spanning over 10,000 years and 250,000 square kilometres.

Established in 1981, the Ngaanyatjarra Council Group (NCG) represents the interests of the Ngaanyatjarra People across the 11 communities in the Central Desert region of Western Australia.
