Workplace Safety and Injury Management Advisor

Helensvale State High School and Miami State High School are seeking a Workplace Health & Safety Officer, a proactive and dedicated individual who will play a pivotal role in promoting and maintaining a strong safety culture across both schools.

This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) position shared between the two schools. The successful applicant will work three days per week at one school and two at the other, alternating the pattern each fortnight.

About the Role

As the Workplace Safety and Injury Management Advisor you will play a pivotal role in fostering a strong safety culture across our schools, providing expert advice and guidance on WH&S matters, ensuring the safety and well-being of every student and team member. You will focus on implementing practical and effective safety systems, working closely with the Executive teams & HSR's to identify, address and resolve hazards and risks.

Your Responsibilities

As the Workplace Safety and Injury Management Advisor, your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Provide advice to management on all matters pertaining to the prevention of accidents, a wide range of hazard identification and control, promotion of health and safety, environmental and risk issues as they relate to students, staff and contractors.
• Conduct proactive risk assessments and inspections to identify any hazards and unsafe or unsatisfactory workplace health and safety conditions and practices.
• Develop, promote and coordinate appropriate training on various health and safety topics that will develop awareness and compliance with legislative and departmental health and safety.
• Develop, revise and maintain effective communication links with the Workplace Health and Safety Committee by providing regular reports and feedback on activities including prevention of accidents, promotion of health and safety, risk issues and emergency procedures.

Facilitate the schools' Workplace Health and Safety networks through the following processes:

1. Organise four Workplace Health and Safety Committee meetings per year.
2. Perform Secretariat duties for the Committee meetings.
3. Organise professional development opportunities within the meetings.
4. Provide advice and support on departmental Workplace Health, Safety and Wellbeing procedures, guidelines and other resources.

5. Carry out and report on inspections to ensure safe work practices and environments are maintained, undertake the evaluation of the use of safety equipment and chemicals and develop and implement emergency procedures.

6. Collate data related to Workplace Health and Safety for Internal School Reviews.

7. Develop and implement procedures and processes for Workplace Health and Safety, including risk assessments, to coordinate and ensure ongoing compliance with the Workplace Health and Safety Program.
8. Investigate, manage and report on the investigation of all serious work injuries, work caused illnesses and dangerous events that occur at the school.
9. Liaise with the management team, officers of WorkCover and the department's Organisational Safety and Wellbeing unit relating to the status of individual Rehabilitation and Return to Work Programs.
10. Investigate, manage and report on the investigation of all serious work injuries, work caused illnesses and dangerous events that occur at the school including OVA's
11. Maintain knowledge is WH&S and to keep up to date with legislative changes.

Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate for this role will demonstrate the following skills and attributes:

• Self-motivated with a genuine passion for promoting and fostering a safety-first culture
• A strong understanding of WHS legislation (including how it applies within a school environment) and a proven ability to develop, implement, and monitor safety systems
• An excellent communicator with the ability to collaborate across teams, influence school behaviour and provide clear & practical guidance on WHS matters
