About the role

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer - Underground to join our Mining Technical Services Team. Reporting to the Manager Technical Services, you will provide advanced geotechnical expertise to ensure the safe and efficient design, excavation, and support of Porgera's underground mine. The role develops and implements ground support strategies, conducts stability assessments, and manages ground monitoring systems to support operational safety and production efficiency. Responsibilities include providing geotechnical input to mine planning, stope sequencing, and backfill design, leading ground fall investigations, maintaining databases, and collaborating with production, backfill, and ventilation teams. The engineer also mentors junior staff, prepares technical reports, and ensures compliance with safety, health, environmental, and regulatory requirements.

You will model safety behaviours and coach and develop your team, working with your team to assess and manage risk.  NPL operates in a complex environment that requires the successful applicant to be a self-starter, with strong ability in delivery to support the mines successful operation whilst coordinating the efforts of your team members to complete projects according to plan in a timely and safe manner.

About you

As the successful applicant, you will hold a Bachelor's Degree in geotechnical, mining, geological, or civil engineering with a geomechanics focus, and a minimum of ten (10) years' underground geotechnical experience, including 3–5 years in a senior or supervisory position. Candidates should have strong expertise in underground geomechanics, stope stability, ground support design, and seismic risk management, with proficiency in geotechnical and mine design software such as Map3D, FLAC3D, RS2, Unwedge, DIPS, and Deswik. The position demands excellent analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills, along with proven leadership and mentoring ability in multicultural teams. Experience in large-scale hard rock mines, preferably gold, exposure to remote or FIFO operations like PNG, and eligibility to work under FIFO roster conditions are highly advantageous, with a strong commitment to safety and operational excellence.

You will demonstrate a 'One Team' approach, providing effective leadership and development for your local team to reinforce NPL's culture and values, always promoting a safe work environment.  The position requires a high energy individual, hands-on management style and desire to continuously improve you and your team's knowledge and systems and methods of work.
