The Team:
9A Oncology is the dedicated inpatient ward for haematology and oncology at the RHH operating as part of Cancer and Blood Services (CaBS). CaBS delivers comprehensive care for patients with cancer and blood disorders, including Tasmania's state-wide bone marrow transplant service.

The unit provides a broad range of services encompassing treatment, clinical research, trials, education, and survivorship care. 9A is a 21-bed ward comprising 11 single rooms and 5 double rooms, designed to support both patient comfort and clinical excellence.

The Role:
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Assistant in Nursing (AIN) to join our healthcare team. In this role, you will provide essential support to nursing staff and play a key part in delivering high-quality, person-centred care to patients. You will assist with daily living activities, hygiene, mobility, and monitoring, while contributing to a safe and supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities

Morning Duties:

  • Receive and clarify handover during morning huddle.
  • Monitor and record pre-breakfast blood glucose levels (BGLs).
  • Deliver meals, including to patients in isolation.
  • Encourage patients to sit out of bed for breakfast.
  • Assist with daily weights.
  • Support menu completion and morning hygiene routines.
  • Provide oral care and shaving assistance.
  • Assess skin integrity and apply dressings with RN guidance.
  • Offer toileting assistance and update relevant charts.
  • Perform mouth care for post stem cell reinfusion (PSCR) patients.
  • Change bed linen daily.

Afternoon Duties:

  • Attend afternoon handover and conduct initial patient rounds.
  • Assist with mobility, including supervised walks.
  • Support evening hygiene and encourage sitting out of bed for dinner.
  • Monitor and record afternoon and pre-dinner BGLs.
  • Deliver meals and provide evening mouth care.
  • Record BD nocte weights and assist with toileting needs.
  • Prepare patients for bed and check bed alarms.

Nocte Duties:

  • Receive handover and identify patient risks (e.g., pressure care, wandering).
  • Conduct initial rounds to assess comfort and safety.
  • Ensure call bells are within reach and offer toileting early in shift.
  • Empty IDC bags at midnight and maintain a clean environment.
  • Restock supplies and prepare patients for the morning as needed.

General Responsibilities (All Shifts):

  • Clean and stock observation trolleys; replace batteries as needed.
  • Restock cannula, CVAD, drug room, and storeroom supplies.
  • Transfer linen and maintain tidy patient surroundings.
  • Provide companionship and diversional therapy.
  • Update journey boards in patient rooms.
  • Prepare Ascitic Tap kits (training provided).
  • Manage cytotoxic waste and PPE storage.
  • Perform and report urine analysis.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and clutter-free ward environment.

Education will be provided for all tasks that are delegated.

You will need:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in patient/client care, with an ability to assist patients/clients to meet their personal care needs and perform activities of daily living as required.
  • Ability to work as an effective team member in an acute care team environment.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills, including written, verbal and numeracy skills.

Details of appointment:
Multiple permanent, full time or part time, shift worker position, working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible.

Salary:
$64,985 to $71,008 per annum (Pro rata). Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

  • Salary range is in accordance with Nurses and Midwives (Tasmania State Service) Agreement 2023.

You'll have access to salary package a range of benefits including living expenses up to $9,010 + $2,650 in meal entertainment each FBT year + other benefits if eligible.

Eligibility:
Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria.

  • Certificate in Health Services Assistance (Acute Care); or
  • Certificate in Individual Support (Ageing Specialisation); or
  • Is currently an undergraduate Bachelor of Nursing student who has completed their first-year clinical practice placement; or
  • A current Diploma of Nursing student who has completed their first clinical practice placement
