Role Purpose
At Yarra Trams we aim to provide our passengers with world-class transport services. Reporting to the Manager for Analytics and Insights in Operational Performance, you will contribute to this by analysing a variety of datasets to identify opportunities across different operational functions to make Melbourne tram services more reliable and punctual. You will do this by:
- Turning data into action - explore and analyse large datasets to uncover trends, design compelling visualisations, and translate insights into meaningful recommendations for the business.
- Identifying opportunities for operational improvement - supporting enhanced safety, efficiency, and performance across tram operations, events, timetabling, rolling stock, and infrastructure.
- Driving innovation through data and technology - promoting new ways (tools, models, technologies) to improve tram performance, including forecasting capabilities and real-time operational insights.
- Delivering timely and accurate reporting - contribute to executive-level and government-level reporting to meet contractual and internal requirements.
Responsibilities
- Explore, analyse, and model operational data to reveal patterns, build forecasts, and drive data-informed interventions.
- Identify new data sources, maintain and support the automation of data pipelines and reporting processes.
- Translate complex data into engaging visual stories using modern BI tools (e.g. Power BI, Python, R, SQL, etc.).
- Work across disciplines to help design and deliver dashboards and reports that make performance transparent, timely, and actionable.
- Contribute to the evolution of our data platform by helping define, curating and prioritising the team's reporting and analytics needs.
- Supporting the production of routine statutory reporting to Regulator(s) and Transport Victoria.
- Assisting team with any training delivery and providing ongoing support to the Analytics Community of Practice.
Skills & Experience
- Tertiary qualification in a relevant field such as Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Information Systems, Business Analytics, or equivalent experience.
- Curious, analytical, and motivated to solve complex, real-world challenges. Comfortable working with messy, real-world data — and curious enough to dig deeper when things don't add up.
- Resilient in the face of ambiguity, with a mindset geared toward experimentation, iteration, and creative problem-solving.
- Technically proficient with using variety of tools for analysis, modelling, or visualisation (e.g. Power BI, SQL, Python, R).
- Highly structured in your approach, with strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in both analysis and reporting.
- Able to communicate ideas clearly, whether through dashboards, presentations, or conversations.
- Proactive and adaptable — able to balance competing priorities, navigate change, and make thoughtful quality-vs-speed trade-offs when delivering work.
- And most importantly: A strong team player who values collaboration, respects diverse perspectives, and contributes to a supportive, open, and honest team culture.
