About the role

The Steward plays a vital role in officiating greyhound racing meetings across New South Wales in accordance with the Greyhound Racing Rules and relevant legislation.

The position is responsible for ensuring race meetings are conducted fairly, safely, and with integrity. This includes overseeing on-track activities, kenneling procedures and inspections, resolving incidents, and supervising the collection of samples for prohibited substance detection.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting pre-race inspections of track surfaces and equipment to ensure greyhound safety and welfare and liaising with track staff to address any issues that arise.
  • Validating greyhound ear brands or nose prints, weighing greyhounds prior to racing, and checking kennel facilities for compliance with security and hygiene requirements.
  • Observing and recording drug sampling processes, ensuring the integrity, security, and evidentiary consistency of swabbing procedures.
  • Monitoring betting activity and assisting in the preparation of race meeting reports for the Chief Steward, Senior Steward, and other officials.
  • Maintaining accurate records of on-track and field duties, including swabbing procedures and greyhound injuries, and responding to correspondence within required timeframes.

This position contributes to maintaining the highest standards of fairness, integrity, and animal welfare in the greyhound racing industry.

You are a professional and impartial individual who demonstrates sound judgement, attention to detail, and the ability to remain composed in high-pressure or critical situations. You take pride in upholding the integrity of the industry and ensuring the welfare of animals under your supervision.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

Knowledge of, or the ability to quickly acquire knowledge of, the Greyhound Racing Rules, Commission policies and procedures, and relevant legislation.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage respectfully with a diverse range of stakeholders.

High-level organisational and record-keeping skills, with a commitment to accuracy and consistency in all aspects of your work.

The ability to apply sound judgement and maintain impartiality in decision-making.

This role requires flexibility to travel to various locations across the region and to work outside standard business hours as required by the racing schedule.
