Dark Mofo is returning in 2026 with a significant offering of large-scale art installations across Hobart's most unique locations. We're seeking an experienced Art Project Manager to work closely with our Art Producer on the development and delivery of nominated art project/s within agreed creative, technical production, risk, and budget parameters.
This role is perfect for someone who thrives in the visual arts and installation space - particularly in festival, event, or museum contexts - and who can bring exceptional organisational skills, creative problem-solving, and a steady hand under pressure to the delivery of world-class art experiences.
THE GIG:
- Manage the end-to-end delivery of assigned festival art projects, from scoping and planning through to bump-out and reconciliation.
- Work closely with the Art Producer, curatorial, design, operational and technical teams to interpret artistic concepts and translate them into deliverable outcomes.
- Develop detailed project schedules, production timelines, and site plans for complex installation environments.
- Oversee the installation and deinstallation of artworks, ensuring technical, safety, and creative integrity are maintained.
- Coordinate and contract artists, fabricators, and specialist suppliers, ensuring requirements are clearly communicated and met.
- Manage project budgets, track expenditure, and seek cost savings while maintaining quality.
- Ensure all relevant permits, approvals, and insurances are secured in consultation with production and compliance teams.
- Lead on-site teams during installation, festival delivery, and pack-down, ensuring deadlines and safety standards are met.
- Collaborate with marketing and communications to develop project briefs and supply content for promotion.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including artists, venue partners, local government, and community representatives.
- Monitor and address risk, WHS, and emergency management requirements for all art project activities.
- Actively pursue sustainable practices in the design, delivery, and deinstallation of works.
THE YOU:
- Proven experience working within the visual arts and installations in festival, event, or museum settings.
- Deep understanding of contemporary art practices and large-scale installation requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex creative projects with multiple stakeholders, tight deadlines, and shifting priorities.
- Experience with artist liaison, contracting, and negotiation in an event or exhibition context.
- Strong technical production knowledge relating to art installation, site-specific works, and unusual or challenging venues.
- Exceptional organisational and time management skills, with the ability to oversee several projects simultaneously.
- Skilled in interpreting and delivering on creative briefs while maintaining artistic integrity.
- Proficient in managing budgets, reporting variances, and implementing cost efficiencies.
- Confident in leading and motivating teams, including contractors and volunteers, in a festival or event setting.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a collaborative and solutions-focused approach.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and event/project scheduling tools.
