Role Purpose
The
Senior SQL Server Database Administrator (DBA)
will support the
AEC's evolving database environment
, ensuring secure, scalable, compliant, and high-performance data solutions.
This is not a routine DBA role—your work will be central to the success of
Electoral Events
, where deadlines are immutable, workloads spike dramatically, and the reliability of database platforms underpins the integrity of Australia's electoral systems.
You'll design, deploy, optimise, and secure
SQL Server platforms (on-prem and Azure)
, while collaborating with cross-functional teams to align with
Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) standards
and
AEC compliance frameworks
.
Key Responsibilities
- Database Design & Deployment
- Design and implement SQL Server solutions in
Azure SQL Database
and
Azure SQL Managed Instance - Deliver
repeatable deployment pipelines
, health reporting, and automation initiatives - Database Development & Optimisation
- Develop scalable solutions that enforce
least privilege principles
and robust data security - Optimise stored procedures, indexing, partitioning, and T-SQL queries for critical workloads
- Implement
Entra Authentication
, including Privileged Identity Management (PIM) and Access Package deployment - Operational Support
- Provide hands-on support across
SQL Server 2016–2022
and Azure SQLMI platforms - Troubleshoot incidents with tools such as
T-SQL, Query Store, SSIS, SSRS, and SQL logs - Deliver clear and actionable incident reports detailing the issue, root cause, and business impact
- Governance & Security
- Ensure compliance with
AEC and ACSC security requirements - Partner with Cyber Security teams to mitigate vulnerabilities and respond to incidents
- Develop
dashboards, alerts, and monitoring reports
to maintain operational oversight - Electoral Event Support
- Provide extended hours and on-call coverage during
Electoral Events - Ensure high availability and resilience during writ-to-writ deadlines
- Collaboration & Leadership
- Collaborate across development, security, and operations teams
- Contribute to continuous improvement in standards, practices, and documentation
- Provide mentoring and knowledge-sharing where appropriate

- Database Operations
- Production support for
SQL Server 2016–2022
and
Azure SQL Managed Instance - Automation of SQL processes using
PowerShell
and
T-SQL - Database Development & Optimisation
- Advanced T-SQL development and performance tuning expertise
- Experience with database design, modelling, and integration with
data pipelines/warehouses - Tools & Technologies
- Experience with
SSRS
and
SSIS - Skilled in
SQL XML

SQL JSON
, and advanced
PowerShell scripting - Compliance & Monitoring
- Delivery of SQL Server solutions aligned with
ACSC and AEC standards - Development of dashboards, reporting, and alerting mechanisms
- Security & Incident Response
- Collaboration with Cyber/Security teams to address vulnerabilities
- Strong experience in incident investigation, resolution, and clear communication with stakeholders
Desirable Skills
- Data modelling and management
- Power BI development and administration

Working Arrangements
- Hybrid role
– candidates can be based in
QLD, WA, ACT, VIC, NSW, NT, SA, or TAS - Travel to Canberra
1–2 times per quarter
for onboarding, planning, and workshops - Full-time: 40 hours per week
- Additional on-call/extended hours required during
