Workshop Leading Hand
Role Overview
Supervises the floor, assigns jobs, ensures tools and parts are ready, mentors apprentices, and communicates with scheduler. Achieve daily/weekly/monthly scheduled tasks.
Key Responsibilities
[ ] Assign daily tasks to workshop technicians.
[ ] Ensure job readiness with parts and tools.
[ ] Provide guidance to apprentices and TAs.
[ ] Maintain high standards of cleanliness and safety.
[ ] Report progress to Workshop Manager.
Daily Tasks (Mon–Fri) – Start of Day
[ ] Confirm daily job schedule with mechanics
[ ] Allocate bays and priority jobs
[ ] Check job cards for parts availability
[ ] Brief team on safety issues and urgent jobs
[ ] Assign apprentice tasks and supervision
[ ] Ensure all mobile tools/diagnostics are operational
Daily Tasks – Throughout the Day
[ ] Confirm job progress every 2–3 hours
[ ] Support troubleshooting or part delays
[ ] Update Fullbay job status
[ ] Communicate with office for urgent customer updates
Daily Tasks – End of Day
[ ] Ensure job cards are updated and clocked correctly
[ ] Confirm parts used and time recorded accurately
[ ] Clean bays, check tool condition
[ ] Flag unfinished work for next day
[ ] Meeting with scheduler & set up next day's plan parts/tool/contractors
[ ] Update Pre-start meeting recorded ready for next day.
Weekly Tasks (Fridays)
[ ] Yard check: Clean-up, safety issues, inventory tidy
[ ] Tool audit: Ensure all shared tools are accounted for
[ ] Consumables check: Restock oil, rags, filters, PPE
[ ] Workshop report to manager: Progress, issues, suggestions
Monthly Tasks
[ ] Tooling inspection: torque wrenches, diagnostic gear
[ ] Lifting gear check: jacks, hoists, slings
[ ] Review WIP with office and close off stuck jobs
[ ] Apprentice/junior tech training or skill review
Annual Tasks (Record Due Dates)
[ ] Calibration of equipment: dyno, test meters, torque gear
[ ] Fire extinguisher checks
[ ] Electrical safety test for tools (Tag & Test)
