The Dual Diagnosis Allied Health (AH) position is a clinician based in the emergency department who works with the Mental Health Emergency Team. Their role is to work with the team to identify consumers who would benefit from a rapid allied health interdisciplinary mental health and drug and alcohol assessment which may inform need for admission or options for discharge with/without alternative services. The Dual Diagnosis AH clinician will conduct transdisciplinary assessment across functional areas, provide brief intervention (if indicated), or escalate referrals to other Allied Health colleagues. They will complete this work in collaboration with the Mental Health Clinical Nurse Consultant and the Emergency Psychiatry Medical Team led by the Consultant Psychiatrist. They may also commence a Mental Health care plan for those being admitted to a mental health unit and inform or support discharge for consumers from the ED.
The Dual Diagnosis AH clinician is a key allied health contact and advocate within the emergency department and will foster close professional links across all roles, facilities and inpatient, outpatient and community services to meet the needs of consumers with a Dual Diagnosis of Mental Health and Drug and/or Alcohol condition. This role requires
advanced reasoning and practice skills as it operates autonomously with minimum direct clinical supervision and
support. The AH clinician will also contribute to the development, reporting, and evaluation of the service.
