Background
Bone is a Melbourne based independent digital agency that builds better, from the inside out.
We deliver from strategy to execution by going in deep to shape, build and adapt digital platforms. By putting real people and living data at the heart of our work, we move users and take businesses further, faster. Being a boutique, high quality, value-based strategic digital partner is Bone's reason for being.
And we're looking for a Web Developer to help us deliver on that vision.
To thrive in this role, we require prior experience in front and back-end development, across a range of platforms and technologies. All in purpose of delivering web, product and ecommerce experiences that move users and take businesses further, faster.
The Position
The role requires you to be on top of modern development practices and standards. This applies to both headless stacks, as well as template based systems.
E.g. a high level of comfort and expertise across headless , as well as templated Shopify work is the base-line we're looking for.
On the headless side of things, experience with CMS's such as Sanity and Storyblok - or equivalent - is required.
Bonus points if you have experience with Wordpress builds that heavily leverage Advanced Custom Fields (ACF).
Part of the Team
You'll be asked to fit within our established Shape, Build and Adapt workflows that stretch across our Design, Production and Development teams. You will be required to pro-actively be part of the entire process. We want our team members to lean in, support and lift up the other parts of our business wherever possible.
On the technology side - in addition to the above - we expect our team members to be able to structure code that's maintainable by others with ease. We offer long-term support to many of our clients and being part of the development team means setting us up for success.
You'll be a master at operating in a fast-paced and agile environment where development priorities often change due to shifting business needs. This will include the ability to effectively help plan and communicate sprints, and shift between competing priorities as required.
Your work will be scheduled by the Production team and is likely to change often and sometimes last minute. You'll be supported by - and are reporting to - the Head of Development to make sure you're able to deliver on what's asked.
Requirements
Collaborative Development- Contribute actively to the project scoping phase by providing technical feasibility input, development estimates, and platform recommendations to support project scoping and planning.
- Execute development during the build phase as resourced by the Production team, writing clean, maintainable code for headless applications, Shopify builds, and WordPress sites with ACF integration.
Typically the deliverables are required to meet WCAG accessibility standards and inclusive design principles. Competence in this space is a requirement. - Support the projects in the post launch phase through efficient code maintenance, feature enhancements, and technical optimisations that enable long-term client success and ongoing development needs.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Design and Production teams throughout all workflow phases, facilitating frictionless handoffs and maintaining project momentum from concept to deployment.
- Maintain code quality standards that support team collaboration, including comprehensive documentation, peer review participation, and adherence to Bone's coding practices across the entire project lifecycle.
- Deploy and optimise across diverse hosting platforms, working confidently with Vercel, SpinupWP, and more bespoke hosting solutions, while managing Git-based CI/CD workflows to ensure seamless deployment pipelines and optimal performance for each project's specific requirements.
- Integrate within Bone's scoping, build and post-launch workflows, contributing proactively across Design, Production, and Development teams. We ask you to lean in to help solve what's in front of us, rather than leaning out until the problem is solved.
- Work with Production on sprint planning and delivery, providing technical input on task estimates and dependencies while executing development work to achieve the goals we've defined within budget parameters and quality standards.
- Adapt dynamically to changing priorities and last-minute adjustments while maintaining delivery excellence and team momentum.
- Communicate effectively with non-technical stakeholders, translating complex technical concepts into business value propositions.
- Support the Head of Development and your peers in developing, documenting and aligning to key processes and resources for the development process to reduce risk and increase efficiency, and continue to optimise these processes as the business evolves.
- Stay current with modern development practices including headless technologies, front-end innovations, CMS integrations, and industry best practices to maintain Bone's competitive edge and technical leadership.
- Contribute to knowledge sharing through our Dev Connects, internal workshops, and documentation that elevates the entire development team's capabilities.
- Engage proactively in client-facing activities including brainstorms, technical workshops, and project meetings to represent Bone's technical expertise and support business development.
Key Selection Criteria
Technical Proficiency- Proven expertise in full-stack development with demonstrable portfolio showcasing headless implementations as well as templated website builds.
- Advanced proficiency in modern web technologies: HTML5, Typescript, Tailwind (or equivalent) and React. Evidence of complex project and/or product deliverables is preferred.
Bonus points for proficiency with Wordpress (ACF), and more advanced front-end deliverables such as WebGL/WebGPU. - Hands-on experience with headless CMS platforms (Sanity, Storyblok, or equivalent) and their integration into production-grade applications.
- Comprehensive eCommerce expertise with a deep understanding of the Shopify platform in particular. Including themes, apps, APIs, checkout processes, and payment integrations.
Broader experience with eCommerce implementation is appreciated.
- 3+ years commercial experience in agency or client-services environment with measurable project success metrics.
- Cross-functional collaboration skills with demonstrated success working alongside Design and Production teams in fast-paced, iterative environments.
End-to-end process thinking, understanding how technical decisions in Shape phase impact Build execution and long-term Adapt sustainability. - Strategic technical communication ability to contribute meaningfully to Shape phase discussions, translating complex technical concepts for diverse stakeholders and supporting client presentations.
- Adaptive project execution combining autonomous development work during Build phase with responsive collaboration when priorities shift or requirements evolve.
- Quality-focused delivery mindset ensures code maintainability that supports seamless transitions through Adapt phase and long-term client relationships.
- Client-partnership mindset aligned with Bone's boutique approach, contributing technical expertise that enhances overall service delivery and client outcomes.
- Proactive problem-solving approach anticipating challenges across project phases and contributing solutions that benefit the entire team and client success.
Benefits
- You'll do great work with great people, on projects that matter
- Small, tight-knit team that genuinely backs each other
- No cookie-cutter solutions – we care about craft
- Hybrid-friendly, Melbourne-based, flexible, and human
