Northern Health are seeking applications from motivated and suitably experienced Aboriginal Mental Health Liaison Officer to join the Narrun Wilip-giin Aboriginal Support Unit.
Northern Health is the major provider of acute, maternity, sub-acute, mental health, specialist, community and home-based services in Melbourne's rapidly growing outer north.
Services are provided through our five main campuses:
Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn Centre, and Kilmore District Hospital. In addition, Mental Health Services are provided at Epping, Broadmeadows, Jacana, Preston, Mill Park and Coburg.
About the Role:
The Aboriginal Mental Health Liaison Officer (AMHLO) is responsible for providing culturally safe support, advocacy, and referral pathways for Aboriginal inpatients admitted to mental health wards. This support extends throughout the inpatient journey, including admission, treatment, and discharge planning, and may involve outreach to community and health services to ensure continuity of care.
The AMHLO will work collaboratively with Aboriginal Liaison Officers and the broader multidisciplinary team to deliver holistic and culturally responsive care to Aboriginal consumers experiencing mental health conditions.
This position requires flexibility to work across all Northern Health sites as service needs arise.

To be successful in this role you will have:
- Relevant work experience within a health setting.
- Experience in working within a mental health service would be highly regarded.
- Have a sound understanding of Aboriginal history, culture and society, including the impact of colonisation, racism, trauma and child removal policies on individuals, families and the community.
- Understanding of Aboriginal social and emotional wellbeing/mental health issues and ability to work between Aboriginal and mainstream concepts.
- Ability to foster cultural awareness in day-to-day contacts with staff.
- Ability to work within a team as well as independent with good problem-solving skills.
- Interest in working in a mainstream mental health service.
- Sound interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with consumers, families, staff and agencies in the community.
