About the Team

The Faculty of Engineering and IT (FEIT) provides a Technical Support Service based on a consolidated Faculty led model. Technical Support activities are delivered by 'clusters' of specialists. These clusters provide services across a range of laboratories and sites on the City Campus and the Tech Lab in Botany. Technical Support Staff interact directly with Schools and Centres and support teaching and research across a range of disciplines in FEIT.

About the Role

The Technical Support Team Leader (TSTL) is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing technical support operations and projects across multiple laboratory facilities at the City Campus and Tech Lab in Botany. The role involves supporting academic staff, students, and research projects by maintaining and developing specialised technical equipment, as well as contributing to teaching, research, and industry engagement. The TSTL also oversees training, development and workload allocation of the MMR technical staff to ensure flexibility and capability across laboratories, promotes operational efficiency, and supports commercially focused research and consultancy projects. The position requires ensuring compliance with environmental health and safety policies to safeguard staff and students.

If successful in applying for this role, you will be responsible for:


• Leading and coordinating a mechanical and mechatronic technical support team to deliver high-quality services for academics, researchers, students, and external partners.


• Managing laboratory operations, including maintenance, equipment setup, procurement, and support for teaching, research, and consultancy projects.


• Providing specialist expertise in operating and developing complex engineering equipment and contribute to innovative research and industry collaborations.


• Training, mentoring, and developing technical staff and students, fostering a flexible, skilled, and positive team culture.


• Ensuring compliance with all health and safety standards, conducting risk assessments and promoting a strong safety culture across laboratories.

With examples, please outline within your Cover Letter, how you meet the following key selection criteria:

  1. Qualification in Engineering such as Engineering Cert III or Engineering Degree with relevant experience in mechanical or mechatronic/robotic engineering.

  2. Ability to demonstrate strategic thinking with an ability to analyse complex technical issues and develop feasible solutions.

  3. Demonstrated experience in the management, construction, maintenance, minor design and repair of mechanical and or mechatronic engineering equipment.

  4. Experience in managing mechanical and/or mechatronic technical staff and scheduling technical work and a demonstrated ability and willingness to take ownership of end-to-end project delivery using expert engineering knowledge and analytical skills.

  5. Demonstrated ability to adopt a flexible, responsive and proactive attitude within the context of continuous improvement.

Remuneration & Benefits

Base Salary Range: $120,827 - $137,609 pa (HEW 8)

This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

This position is
full-time,
and appointment will be made on a
continuing basis.
