The Role

The Army Aviation Systems Branch (AASB) Work Health and Safety (WHS) Manager, APS 6, is accountable for complex WHS outcomes within an integrated workforce. The manager will have WHS knowledge of and comply with legislative frameworks, government decision-making, and Defence's mission and policy requirements. The manager will demonstrate initiative and judgment in interpreting policy and applying procedures to achieve results.

  • Developing and implementing programs for hazard identification, risk assessment, and incident management.
  • Providing advice on the application of WHS legislation, Defence policies, and procedures.
  • Engaging with internal and external stakeholders on complex and sensitive WHS issues, conducting investigating and reporting on serious incidents, managing sensitive reports, and negotiating safety improvements.
  • Liaising with AASB leadership, external regulatory bodies like Comcare, and internal WHS representatives.

The manager will have a significant level of stakeholder engagement, requiring them to anticipate, identify and respond to their needs and expectations to achieve AASB and Defence outcomes. The role, at times, may also involve leading a team, with accountability for setting work priorities and managing workflows. They are expected to build team capability through coaching and providing feedback.

About our Team

The Army Aviation Systems Branch (AASB) Executive and Support team, located in Brisbane, Queensland, and part of the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG), is crucial for enabling Defence capability. Their core functions are delivered through key service areas: Quality Management, Security, Information & Records, Work Health and Safety, Workforce Management, Reserve Management, Accommodation/Facilities, Risk Management, and Operating Budget. AASB also champions career development by offering a comprehensive professional development program to build leadership and technical skills, while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

They possess a solid background in WHS principles, with practical experience in providing expert advice, managing incidents, and maintaining accurate records.

This person is an excellent communicator, skilled in building and sustaining effective relationships with management and key stakeholders. They are adept at compiling performance reports and analysing incident data to identify trends, which they then use to inform strategic planning and drive continuous improvement. The ideal candidate is also comfortable providing WHS training and briefings, ensuring all staff are well informed and engaged. Ultimately, this role requires a candidate who is not only knowledgeable but also a strategic thinker and a collaborative partner, dedicated to fostering a culture of safety across the organisation.
