The opportunity we have available
The Finance, Budget and Governance Division is looking to fill one Assistant Director position in the Financial Accounting Team and create an order of merit for our Finance Business Partner teams.
The Financial Accounting Team is responsible for meeting the department's statutory financial reporting, asset management, tax and appropriation management requirements, including preparation of annual financial statements and monthly reporting to the Department of Finance and is seeking high performing candidates. The team works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
The Finance Business Partners deliver customer focused, fit-for-purpose and professional financial management and budgeting services on behalf of the Chief Financial Officer, to Senior Executives and staff, particularly on complex matters such as financial analysis, forecasting, budgeting, costing and reporting.
We are currently looking to fill 1 financial accountant position and create merit pool for both these roles to fill in future vacancies.
What will you do?
The Assistant Director within the Financial Accounting Team will be focused on financial reporting.
The role is dynamic and includes the following responsibilities:
- Meet statutory financial reporting requirements such as for the soft close and end of financial year financial statements,
- Performing month-end and year-end close processes,
- Assist preparing the annual financial statements plan including papers and advice for the Financial Statements Subcommittee and the Audit and Risk Committee,
- Prepare high quality accounting position papers and file notes,
- Cultivate productive working relationships with key internal stakeholders and external stakeholders including the Australian National Audit Office and the Department of Finance; and
- Prepare guidance documents.
The role of Assistant Director, Finance Business Partner key responsibilities include:
- Develop and manage departmental budgets, including staffing.
- Prepare monthly financial reports for Senior Executive, including variance analysis and commentary.
- Monitor and review monthly forecasts in partnership with our stakeholders.
- Provide advice on emerging and material financial impacts on the financial performance of our stakeholders.
- Foster and maintain effective working relationships to promote partnerships and seamless financial services.
- Track divisional staffing movements and recruitment activity.
- Support the development of internal funding proposals.
- Prepare monthly financial accruals.
- Co-ordinate input into the end of financial year process and ANAO audit requests and compliance activities

Eligibility requirements
Employment with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts is subject to conditions prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999 including:
- Citizenship: candidates must be an Australian citizen at the time of submitting your application.
- Health Assessment: the preferred candidate may be required to undergo a medical examination conducted by the department's preferred medical provider.
- Security Clearance: the successful candidate must be able to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance at Baseline Level. You must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information. You must have lived in Australia, or have a checkable background, for at least the preceding five years for Baseline Vetting clearances. - Police check: The successful candidate must satisfactory complete an Australian Federal Police criminal history check.
- Integrity and Performance check: The successful candidate must satisfy the requirements in an Integrity and Performance check which is completed by your most recent employer.
- Qualifications: Degree in Accounting, Commerce or similar discipline and studying towards CPA/CA (or equivalent) full member status is highly desirable.
