Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Moderna Full time $120,000 - $180,000 per year

The Role

Joining Moderna offers the unique opportunity to be part of a pioneering team that's revolutionizing medicine through mRNA technology, with a diverse pipeline of development programs across various diseases.

As an employee, you'll be part of a continually growing organization, working alongside exceptional colleagues and strategic partners worldwide, contributing to global health initiatives.

Moderna's commitment to advancing the technological frontier of mRNA medicines ensures a challenging and rewarding career experience, with the potential to make a significant impact on patients' lives worldwide.

Moderna is committed to enhancing Australia's biotech landscape through a long-term partnership that focuses on strengthening pandemic resilience. Our Melbourne-based large-scale mRNA vaccine manufacturing facility will be a cornerstone in Australia's ability to respond to future health threats efficiently. This collaboration not only brings cutting-edge medical technology to the forefront but also emphasizes job creation and local talent development. We're inviting visionary professionals to be part of this transformative journey, making a tangible impact on global health security.

This is a rare opportunity to join Moderna during the foundational buildout of our cutting-edge Technology and Innovation Center in Clayton, Melbourne. As the site Head of Engineering & Facilities, you will be instrumental in building, leading, and scaling the Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, and Metrology functions across the Drug Substance and Drug Product manufacturing facilities. You will take a leadership role during the construction, start-up, and commissioning phase of this state-of-the-art mRNA manufacturing site and establish core capabilities for its operational success. Reporting to the Executive Director, Global Maintenance and Operations, you will also be a key member of the Site Leadership Team.

Here's What You'll Do

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • Leading Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, and Metrology activities at the Melbourne MTIC manufacturing site.

  • Serving as a key contributor during the construction, CQV, and operational readiness phase of the new facility.

  • Developing and staffing the full Facilities & Engineering (F&E) organization, aligned with the operational readiness timeline.

  • Designing and deploying a robust, reliability-centered maintenance program in collaboration with Moderna's global manufacturing network.

  • Ensuring compliance with local safety standards, government regulations, and Moderna internal procedures during all phases of the project.

  • Collaborating with Moderna Facility Services to harmonize site-level practices with global best-in-class benchmarks.

Your responsibilities will also include:

  • Defining departmental objectives, performance goals, and vendor management strategies.

  • Implementing and maturing maintenance systems covering calibration, spare parts, and preventative programs to mitigate business continuity risks.

  • Leading or overseeing investigations, CAPAs, deviations, and change controls with a quality-focused mindset.

  • Supporting regulatory inspections, partner audits, and internal compliance reviews with technical and documentation expertise.

  • Authoring and approving GMP documentation, SOPs, and technical protocols.

  • Building a high-performing, inclusive team culture with clear goals, mentorship, and succession planning.

  • Identifying deputies and ensuring business continuity.

  • Acting as a cross-functional thought leader, solving complex technical challenges alongside operations, safety, and quality leaders.

  • Ensuring strict adherence to GxP regulations and Moderna documentation/data integrity standards.

  • Completing all required training plans in accordance with requalification timelines.

The key Moderna Mindsets you'll need to succeed in the role:

  • "We behave like owners. The solutions we're building go beyond any job description."
In this site-defining role, you will act as an enterprise leader—not only building core infrastructure, but owning outcomes that impact patient access, product quality, and business continuity across a growing international network.

  • "We digitize everywhere possible using the power of code to maximize our impact on patients."
You will have opportunities to shape how maintenance, metrology, and engineering systems are digitally enabled, creating visibility and predictive insights across the site's technology infrastructure. This includes engaging with generative AI tools that accelerate documentation, data integrity, and operational decision-making.

Here's What You'll Need (Basic Qualifications)

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in an engineering field required / Master's degree preferred

  • Experience: Minimum 15 years of Facilities and/or Engineering experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries required / Minimum 7 years of experience leading a Facilities & Engineering group

  • Demonstrated aptitude or ability to learn in order to gain a strong understanding of GxP regulations (specify GMP, GLP, GCP, GVP or other applicable standards)

  • This position is site-based, requiring you to be at Moderna's site full-time. This position is not eligible for remote work.

  • As part of Moderna's commitment to workplace health and safety, this role may be subject to pre-employment and periodic medical assessments, in line with relevant legal and operational requirements.

At Moderna, we believe that when you feel your best, you can do your best work.  That's why our global benefits and well-being resources are designed to support you—at work, at home, and everywhere in between.

  • Quality healthcare and insurance benefits
  • Lifestyle Spending Accounts to create your own pathway to well-being
