About the Opportunity

The Assistant Corporate Accountant provides day-to-day support for the Corporate Finance accounting function, undertaking financial and management accounting tasks, maintaining corporate accounting systems, and ensuring compliance with legislative and accounting standards. The role works closely with managers, executives, and external stakeholders to deliver timely, accurate financial reporting and analysis.

The key aspects of the Assistant Corporate Accountant role include:

  • Reviewing monthly income and expenditure, investigating budget variances, and providing financial analysis to branch managers.
  • Preparing and reviewing balance sheet reconciliations, cashflow forecasts, and working papers.
  • Maintaining the fixed asset register, processing salaries journals, and reconciling payroll-related accounts.
  • Preparing and lodging statutory returns, including BAS and Fringe Benefits Tax.
  • Assisting with the preparation of annual financial statements and responding to audit queries.
  • Supporting the development and review of finance policies and procedures.
  • Providing backup for the Team Leader Corporate Finance and mentoring the Finance Officer.
  • Ensuring compliance with Treasurer's Instructions, accounting standards, and relevant legislation.

What You'll Need to Succeed

  • Degree qualification in accounting, commerce, finance, or economics with an accounting major.
  • Proven ability to manage high volumes of work, prioritise effectively, and meet strict deadlines.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in preparing and reviewing financial statements and reports.
  • High attention to detail, initiative, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build strong working relationships with managers, executives, and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of current accounting standards, Treasury and Audit requirements, and taxation legislation.
  • Experience with Masterpiece, Crystal Enterprise, Microsoft Office, and trust/common fund accounting principles (Desirable).

About the Business

The Office of the Public Trustee (Public Trustee) operates as part of the Attorney-General's Department and was established on 1 January 1881, under the Public Trustee Act 1995 (SA). It offers services to South Australians, including will preparation, powers of attorney, and administration of deceased estates and trusts.

The Public Trustee is also responsible for managing the personal, legal, and financial affairs of individuals who are unable to handle these matters on their own. At the heart of our work is our commitment to protecting the wishes and interests of those we serve.
