Special Olympics Melbourne Inner East (MIE) offers a Basketball training program for nearly 40 athletes. This program is for all-abilities and adapted for individuals with intellectual disability. 

We are looking for an accredited Basketball coach with a minimum of Bronze-level accreditation to work with our co-ordinator to coach our athletes at our fortnightly program.

Boroondara Park Primary School, located at 40 Almond St, Balwyn North 

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Special Olympics is a not-for-profit organisation who helps those with an intellectual disability to participate in sport to enhance their physical and mental wellbeing, sense of purpose and community connections. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fortnightly Training Program 

  • Support athletes as they participate in their Basketball training and skills development
  • Provide high quality training to athletes of varying skill levels, cognitive abilities and capacity.
  • Monitor and provide feedback regarding athlete development
  • Provide a safe and supportive environment that encourages athletes to achieve their personal best
  • Encourage the participation of all attending athletes, regardless of ability
  • Monitor athletes and ensure their safety and adherence to the code of conduct during program activities
  • Encourage athletes to encourage and support each other on while training
  • Know all the safety concerns of athletes in your program (e.g. mobility/instability issues, epilepsy, asthma etc.)
  • Mentor and guide assistant coaches
  • Be a positive ambassador for Special Olympics

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum Bronze-level (second level) accreditation with Basketball Australia (must be current/active).
  • Has previous Basketball coaching experience
  • Have the knowledge to implement/deliver best-practice Basketball coaching techniques.
  • Familiarity with the Special Olympics Athlete-centred coaching guidelines
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills
  • Ability to be flexible and to improvise when needed
  • Ability to inspire and motivate others to believe in the Special Olympics Mission
  • Ability to work within set boundaries
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills
  • Understanding of relevant WH&S requirements
  • Good time management skills

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Previous experience with Basketball or similar sporting programs preferred. 

In addition to a valid Working with Children Check, we will require the successful candidate to sign up as a formal volunteer and complete the following 3 free online induction training courses: 

  • Child Protection and Safeguarding Course (Play by the Rules – Sports Integrity Australia)
  • Special Olympics Australia Volunteer Induction (Inclusive Sport Academy)
  • Special Olympics Australia Volunteer Coaches (Inclusive Sports Academy)

COMMITMENT DESCRIPTION

  • Fortnightly Saturdays
  • Arrive 9:00am for a 9:30am start. Training finishes at 10:30am.
