Head of Payroll/Payroll Manager - Professional Services - Australia & New Zealand (ANZ)

We are seeking an experienced
Head of Payroll
to lead the payroll function across our clients Australian and New Zealand entities. This appointment is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, legislative compliance, and efficiency of payroll operations, systems, and governance within a dynamic, high-volume, and complex professional services environment. The successful candidate will drive process improvement and mitigate operational risk at an executive level.
Key Accountabilities
- Regulatory Governance:
Serve as the definitive Subject Matter Expert (SME) for all Australian and New Zealand payroll legislation, including
Fair Work, Modern Awards, State Payroll Tax, Superannuation Guarantee, and Single Touch Payroll (STP)
. - Policy Development:
Own the end-to-end payroll policy suite, ensuring its interpretation and application align precisely with complex remuneration structures inherent to a professional services partnership model (e.g., variable compensation, partner draws). - System Strategy:
Act as the business owner for all core payroll platforms (e.g.,
SAP, Workday, Chris21, or major ERP solutions
). Drive system upgrades, integrations, and continuous process automation initiatives to enhance efficiency and data integrity. - Financial Integrity:
Collaborate with the Group Finance function to ensure seamless payroll general ledger reconciliation, accurate cost centre reporting, and the timely remittance of all statutory deductions. - Stakeholder Management:
Develop robust partnerships with key internal stakeholders across Finance, HR/People & Culture, and IT to ensure data consistency and strategic alignment. - Service Delivery:
Champion a high-calibre, confidential payroll enquiry resolution service, ensuring a positive employee experience across the firm.
About you:
- 7+ years
of progressive experience in managing complex payroll operations, with a minimum of
3 years in a Head of Payroll, Group Payroll Manager, or Senior Manager
equivalent role within a large corporate or professional services environment. - Expert proficiency
with large-scale payroll software and a proven track record in driving successful payroll system transformation projects. - High proficiency in advanced Microsoft Excel and sophisticated payroll reporting tools
- CPA, CA, or professional certification from the Australian Payroll Association (APA).
- Experience with global payroll coordination or oversight (NZ/APAC preferred).
