Position Information

The Secondary College of Languages (formerly known as the Saturday School of Community Languages) is a NSW Department of Education co-educational College that was established in 1978 to provide a pathway for students to study their heritage language on a Saturday. The College operates in Campuses located at 13 high school sites, including 11 Campuses in metropolitan Sydney and one each in Wollongong and Newcastle. Over 2,700 students from Year 5 to Year 12 attend classes on Saturdays during the department's school term; 98% of students come from a language background other than English.

As the largest provider of face-to-face language education in NSW, including support for students in remote areas, the College provides a unique and dynamic learning environment where students from diverse cultural backgrounds are motivated to engage linguistically and culturally. Through the College's exemplary teaching and learning programs, students develop their proficiency in their heritage language and their intercultural capability.

All courses are derived from NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) language syllabuses and Collaborative Curriculum and Assessment Framework for Languages (CCAFL), a curriculum and assessment Framework developed nationally for small candidature languages. The 22 languages studied at the College are included in a student's Record of School Achievement (RoSA) and Higher School Certificate. Student enrolments at individual Campuses range from 50 up to 650. The College comes under the auspices of the Student Support and Specialist Programs Directorate in the Teaching, Learning and Student Wellbeing division and works collaboratively with a Director, Educational Leadership in the Public Schools structure.

The exceptional quality of language education at the College is underpinned by a strong working partnership between staff, students, and their families as well as with the Community Languages Schools Program. College staff are highly qualified and committed professionals who inspire students to achieve their personal best. All teachers and executive staff are qualified teachers with approval to teach from the NSW Department of Education.

The Secondary College of Languages is driven by the core values of connection, diversity, and excellence in language education, which contribute to community harmony by promoting in students a strong sense of cultural identity and a feeling of belonging to their heritage within and beyond the Australian context.
