About the opportunity
Time for a tree change? A rare opportunity has arisen in our busy Microbiology Laboratory at Tamworth. We are looking for an experienced Microbiological Scientist to lead our team in the everchanging environment. Tamworth carries out testing for the 6 laboratories within the New Enland on a 7 day basis and with recent new analyser acquistions is placing itself to play a significant role in support of clinicians through New England.

You will be in charge of the Microbiology laboratory at Tamworth. Currently with 5.5 fulltime staff this laboratory works across 7 day and 2 shifts per day to ensure prompt turnaround for regional work. This role includes participationg in the roster as well as management and compliance supervision. You will also be liasing closely with local clinicans and the supervising laboratory medical and scientific staff based at our John Hunter Laboratory. This is a wonderful opportunity to get ou of the city rat race and provide a high standard of Microbiological servies for many years to come.

What you'll be doing

Responsible for the management of scientific, technical and support staff, all testing and associated activities and logistics for the assigned laboratory. The position oversees the quality, cost and operational integrity of the department, regulatory compliance and accreditation of laboratory services in the department, human resource, business and resource management.

  1. Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to pathology from a recognised tertiary institution.
  2. Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers, patients and clinical and laboratory staff, along with report writing skills, statistical evaluation of scientific data and the ability to effectively communicate policies and procedures
  3. Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of accreditation frameworks, relevant standards and quality systems
  4. Demonstrated managerial skills with experience in laboratory operations, administration and budgeting
  5. Advanced knowledge of Pathology Laboratory Information Systems including supervision of e-based Quality Management Systems
  6. Extensive high level knowledge of working within the relevant section of the laboratory with knowledge of the operation and maintenance of analytical equipment in a pathology laboratory
  7. Sound understanding of legislation, policies and requirements that impact the laboratory environment including work health and safety and privacy requirements
