Trainer – Small Engines (Youth Program)

Flexible & Negotiable Hours | Part-Time | Cairns

Use your hands-on skills to mentor young people and help them re-engage through practical learning.

Australian Training Works Group (ATW) is seeking a Trainer for The Rebuild Project - a practical, workshop-based program designed to support disengaged young people to build skills, confidence and routine through hands-on activities.

The program focuses on repairing and restoring small motors and appliances (mowers, whipper snippers, generators, outboards, small machines etc.) and giving the items back to community members who need them. It's meaningful, practical work with real community benefit.

About the Role
  • Part-time with flexible, negotiable hours (minimum 2–3 days per week; up to 5 days / 30 hours per week if preferred)
  • Based in Cairns
  • Deliver hands-on training in small engine and appliance repair
  • Supervise and mentor young people in a safe, structured workshop environment
  • Work collaboratively with the Program Coordinator to plan weekly activities
  • Support participants to develop confidence, discipline, and basic mechanical skills
  • Maintain tools, equipment and workshop safety standards

This role suits retired or semi-retired tradespeople, small engine mechanics, marine/outboard technicians, maintenance workers, hobby mechanics, or anyone with strong practical skills who enjoys teaching others.

What We're Looking For
  • Experience working with or repairing small motors, mowers, outboards, or similar equipment
  • Ability to explain tasks clearly and patiently
  • A supportive, encouraging approach with young people
  • Strong safety awareness and ability to supervise a small workshop
  • Valid Driver's Licence
  • Blue Card (or ability to obtain)

Formal trade qualifications are welcome but not required — practical experience and a willingness to mentor are highly valued.

Why Join ATW?
  • Flexible working hours tailored to your availability
  • Rewarding role with real community impact
  • Supportive team and structured program
  • Opportunity to stay active and use your skills without full-time pressure
