The organisation

The Office of the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner (OADC) plays a vital role in fostering a society free from discrimination, prejudice, bias and prohibited conduct. Established under the Anti-Discrimination Act 1998 (Tas), the Office works with integrity, impartiality, and professionalism to promote fairness, equality, and respect across the community.

The opportunity

The Anti-Discrimination Commissioner is a statutory appointment made by the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice. Operating independently, the Commissioner holds responsibility for promoting equity and eliminating discrimination across Tasmania.

Key functions of the role include:

• Investigating and conciliating complaints of discrimination and prohibited conduct
• Advising the Minister on systemic issues and potential legislative reform
• Conducting inquiries, consultation and research into discrimination and its effects
• Leading education and awareness programs, including the publication of guidelines
• Examining legislation and reporting on discriminatory impacts

This is a highly visible leadership position, pivotal to upholding Tasmania's Anti-Discrimination Act 1998 and ensuring that the principles of fairness and inclusion are embedded in law, policy and community practice. The Commissioner will lead the OADC with integrity, engaging with government, community and industry stakeholders to deliver systemic change.

You are a principled and persuasive leader with deep expertise in discrimination and related laws and policies. With a sharp legal mind and strong ethical compass, you bring the ability to interpret and apply legislation with clarity, fairness, and independence. Your decisions are sound, balanced, and clearly communicated, ensuring confidence in the role of an independent statutory officer.

You are experienced in managing conciliation and investigation processes, resolving complex and sensitive complaints with professionalism and integrity. Skilled at navigating challenging issues, you balance impartiality with proactive engagement, maintaining resilience under pressure while safeguarding the credibility of the Office.

Highly relational, you excel in building and sustaining trust with government, community, and key stakeholders. Your superior communication, consultation and negotiation skills enable you to advocate effectively, address the concerns of diverse communities, and contribute to broader policy and practice reforms.
