Your day as a Senior Advisor (Data and innovation)

As a Senior Advisor (Data & Innovation), you will lead high-impact projects that harness data analytics, process innovation, and emerging technologies to improve budget decision-making and deliver better outcomes for the people of NSW.

You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams across NSW Treasury, including agency-facing teams, IT, and reform units, as well as stakeholders across the NSW public sector. Your insights will directly inform strategic advice to the Expenditure Review Committee of Cabinet, Treasury's Leadership Team, and the Treasurer's Office.

You'll use tools like Snowflake, Power BI, Fabric, SQL, and Python to analyse large-scale financial datasets, identify trends, and generate insights. You'll also explore AI-driven approaches to automate reporting, streamline workflows, and enhance Treasury's analytical capability.

The Budget Management and Control team, recognised in the 2023 Treasury Awards for exceptional performance, is leading a high-profile upgrade of the State's budget system, Prime. This program includes enhancements to budget processes, reporting, and analytics. A key initiative is to modernise how we use data, improving reporting, streamlining workflows, and enabling deeper insights through automation and advanced analytics.

This role contributes directly to Treasury's digital vision and this role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of data and decision-making at Treasury. You'll be part of a high-performing team recognised for excellence and contribute to reforms that will have lasting impact across government.

Achieve success as Senior Advisor

We're looking for someone who brings a mix of technical expertise, financial acumen, strategic thinking, and a passion for innovation. You don't need to tick every box, but we value:

  • Demonstrated experience in public sector budgeting, financial systems, and financial analysis, ideally within NSW or a comparable jurisdiction.
  • Proven ability to work with large datasets, applying modelling techniques using SQL, DAX, and Power BI to generate insights and support decision-making.
  • Experience identifying and implementing process improvements, including opportunities for automation and streamlining data workflows.
  • A strong interest in AI-enabled solutions, with curiosity about how emerging technologies can enhance public sector decision-making, data use, and service delivery. Prior experience is not essential; what matters is a willingness to learn and experiment.
  • Strong project leadership skills, with a track record of delivering reforms or initiatives from concept through to implementation.
  • A collaborative mindset, with a desire to contribute to a high-performing, purpose-driven team.
  • Proficiency with tools such as Python, Power Query, Power BI, and SQL, and a willingness to explore new technologies as they emerge.
  • Tertiary qualifications or equivalent professional experiencein accounting, finance, economics, data science, statistics, computer science, or a related discipline.
